Hello all,
I'm new here, have had my FJ60 for ~ 1 year now and loving it. Hoping to get your help with an issue I'm having. Last weekend while idling at a stop light it died on me, afer a few persistent attempts to fire it back up it started and I was able to get it home, but can smell gas (more than usual) and again it was attemting to die unless gas was applied.
Took it to a local mechanic in Concord area I've used on my other cars, his opinion is that my carburetor is the problem (it floods) and needs to be replaced. He is quoting $694 for a Toyota carburetor and another $400 for labor, which seems extremely steep.

Any suggetsion would be appreciated. Should I opt out for rebuild instead, seek cheaper options? Any Landcruiser preffered mechanics in Concord/North Charlotte area? Thanks so much for your help.

1. Find a new mechanic!

2. Very easy to take the carb off

3. Before you do that, if it ever stalls like that again check the idle cutoff solinoid. If not getting power, it cuts the fuel to the carb and the truck dies. Usually all you need to fix it is the clean the contacts. It's the electrical connector hanging off the side of the carb.

4. I used to always tell people to send their carb to Mark's Offroad and or Jim Chenowith for a rebuild but now you also have the option of buying a Troll Hole Chinese knock off or similar carbs that pop up on Ebay directly from China. Prolly safer to buy from Troll Hole. People seem to love these carbs. I have never tried one. It is a fast and cheap way to get your truck running.

5. last but not least, many people think they need a carb when they have some other problem. Take your truck to Darin at Cannucks Cruisers (spelling?) and pay him to give it a once over. I am not a customer but fully respect his cruiser knowledge.

Welcome to mud!

But yes the first thing to check is the idle solinoid. Check to make sure you hear it clicking . If not make sure you have power going to it.

I am not in Charlotte but need to head that way here soon though to pick up a frame . I can give it a look over at that time.

AFAIK Toyota does not have anymore carbs. Could be wrong. Let me look real fast.

Also i know Jim is about 3 months out for turn around time, least he was just the other month.

MSRP on the carb is 1079.00

My price is less than that but i can not get it for the price he told you. That price is good that he told you. Not too sure what he charges per hour for labor though.

I have a trollhole carb on mine. I'd go Toyota factory if you can. Though my truck runs good it is a little inconsistant at times and I've had to adjust it.
I also just delt with that idle solenoid problem and was able to fix it. Where the wire connects had to be re-soldered. To test for function, find the wire coming out of the carb and the plug which it connects to, unplug it, turn your ignition to the on position without starting the truck, reconnect the wire and listen for the solenoid to click. If no click trace the wire to the solenoid and move it a little to see if the wire is split somewhere. If the solenoid is the problem it is easy to remove and pretty straight forward to fix.

I feel the same way as Burt88

If it was my truck I'd have the stock carb rebuilt.

My friends Ryan Bascom and Steve M both love their Troll Hole carbs though. Ryan is a bad ass mechanic though and he installed both. Perhaps it's his super tuning that did the trick. In my opinion he is right up there with Mark Algazy, Jim C and Darin as top notch cruiser mechanics.

Since I believe in supporting your local businesses I'd see if Darin could do it. Plan B for me would be Mark's Offroad (full disclosure, Mark is a good friend of mine and Darin I've only met once). Your in good hands with either of them or Jim C. all are Cruiser gurus.

My first point was intended to objectively point out your options - in this one, I state my opinion! Take it for what it's worth!

If its not the solenoid, and you have to go w/ a carb, I would definitely go with the trollhole carb (search trollhole carb and you will find all kinds of info), Took a 2f that had set for 10+ years, changed all fluids, installed a carb from trollhole, and my pop's has been dd'ing it for the last 3 years.

Thanks all for the information. Pardon the rookie's ignorance, but I'm a bit confused:
- is troll hole a brand and where do I get it?
- if I rebuild stock, who should I go with, being in NC?
- quick search on eBay, I found an 83 one for $200, is that an option?

Thanks.

Trollhole Cruisers is the Trollhole carb. Marshall is his name. He has a section in the vendor section here on Mud.

Marshall is easy to find...he is the prez of upstate cruisers and lives in Greenville SC.
I won a thc carb in a raffle and have been running it on my sons 40 for about 2 years now with no issues.

Mark and Johnny at Toyota techs are awesome in Charlotte/ft mill. They rebuilt my 2f 3 months ago and have worked on my cruisers for 7 yrs.

I have a Jim c carb on my truck. It took a while to get but I knew it would so I sent him a spare instead of mine so I still had my truck running.

Trollhole gets great reviews and I don't think he'd sell a bad product at all.

I think cruiser parts and some of the other parts places have rebuilt ones in stock.

Still available in Thailand for $650 USD!!! My friend checked for me last month.

Bummer no longer here in the USA

Interesting. How much is shipping something from Thailand and is it hard?

I don't think it would be very easy to do.

There would also be the risk of paying for OEM and getting chinese aftermarket.

I had a friend working a security job there and he checked with Toyota.

Unless you know someone there, it would be sketchy at best.

Same guy bought some Land Cruiser parts in the Philippines and about half of them were not OEM even though they came in OEM boxes. That was stuff like hook hooks, emblems, tail lights, etc.
