Background:
My BJ70 is currently in the body shop to repair some damage to the right rear door. To complete the repair, the shop removed the rear glass. The gasket (weather strip) holding(sealing) the glass in place included the chrome insert detail. While re-installing the glass, the shop damaged/destroyed the chrome strip and are struggling on how to replace it.
The truck is a North American spec BJ70 manufactured in Sept1986.

Questions:
Is 68291-90K01 (Weatherstrip, Back Door Glass, RH, W/Molding) the correct replacement part?
If the rubber weatherstrip (gasket) is still good, can the chrome insert (molding) be purchased as a separate item? If so, where can it be sourced?

Thanks for the help. I realize this is a fairly minor situation, but I am on business travel and the shop is starting to freak out on getting the replacement part. Consequently, I want to get my facts dead on so I can talk the shop through it over the phone.

68291-90K01 is the correct number for one with the moulding slot. That number is no longer live in this market. You can still get a 68291-90K00 which is for without the mouldings. The mouldings were seprate and are no longer live in this market.

I wonder if their is a fake chrome plastic insert strip, either generic of from another vehicle that would work? Just thinking off the top of my head but maybe the insert strip used in the windshields of 1980's Chevrolet pickups??

Not likely. it is quite specific.

Can you post a photo of the desired part? The shop I use has a BJ70 "parts truck" and they may have the part.

Yes, I had the same thought that there might be aftermarket insert that you would cut to length and fit to match. The 60 series trucks could use the same product too so it seems like there would be a need and a market. No one has been able to identify any yet though.

Charles, I am in Texas for business and the truck/shop are in Georgia, so it is not possible for me to get a picture. I would ask the shop but their email is messed up (they can receive but not send emails) so getting a picture out of them is not possible. I do have a picture of the entire rear end of the truck and you might be able to see the chrome insert around the window weatherstrip.

Hey Larry
I received an extra set of rear doors when I purchased my truck and then cut the tops off so I could use them as half doors. If I have the chrome peice you need, I'll send it to you if Charles doesn't beat me to it.
Let me know.
Peter

Peter, Thanks I appreciate that. Using your's could present a similar problem because it is also aged and probably prone to the same damage during removal and re-installation

I will drop by the shop today and take a look. I will let you know later today.
Do you know if the aluminum surround is all one piece or does it break down for shipping?

Charles, It breaks down into the 4 side lengths and the 4 corners. Thanks

The parts vehicle still has the trim if you are interested.
