over 16k for a Prado?! It baffles me when I see people buying a Prado when their issues and associated headaches are well known especially when people buy them for more than the cost of an HDJ81 thats locked with a winch

If I am not mistaken the HDJ81 is to new to be legally imported into the U.S.

I always wanted one of these. What issues and headaches do they have?

To my knowledge the 2L and the 2L-T ( which this particular Cruiser has ) don't have significant issues. However the
2L-TE in the LJ78 does not have a stellar track record which has been covered in detail on this forum.

Crushers says the 2L-T is also a bad engine, just not quite so bad as the 2L-TE.

A HDJ81 may not be up for importation this year but it will next year. If you are that serious about owning a vehicle such as a Land Cruiser then either wait instead of paying 16k for something not even half as good as a HDJ81 or buy one now and keep it with some Canadian relative.

It's not that I feel a HDJ81 is the best thing out there, afterall I don't drive one, and it's not that I think that a Prado with a 2L-T is a total POS. This could be a good wheeler and if it fell into my hands I'd probably put it to good use (unless I could sell it for 16k). I do however feel that 16k for a Prado of this variety is absolutely absurd.

Unfortunately it boils down to supply and demand. A Canadian Cruiser enthusiast has a lot more options than his or her counterparts south of the border. I'm in no way justifying the price however a good diesel 60,70 or 80 Series will bring considerably more in the U.S. than it might in Canada. It's human nature to want what you can't have. : )
