Anyone know which models the 1986 &1989 landcruisers are in the UK?

Do they have permanent 4wheel drive?
Do they have freewheeling hubs?
:whoops:

I'm not sure the exact date that Toyota introduced the 62 series to the UK. Mine is a 1989 and is a 62. You can tell them apart by the headlights - 60s have round / 62s have two square.

Both vehicles have free wheeling hubs ie. selectable 4WD

Both the 86 and 89 should have part time 4wd and freewheel hubs.

From the factory, all 4wd's are either permanent 4wd OR part-time 4wd with lockouts. Aftermarket allows for changes, ie: replacing stock drive flanges with lockouts

Cheers guys, just saw some on autotrader at a bargain price but as they're not full time 4wd and have freewheel hubs i shall pass!

many thanks for your help!

it also might have seen a LCII aka Bundura aka light duty 70 series(coils and hilux axles ect)

The full time landcruisers didn't start until 1990 with the 80 series. AFAIK no 70 series are fulltime. Absence of a manual locking hub does not mean it is a fulltime 4WD as they may be auto locking hubs, electric locking hubs or just drive plates. THe best way to tell is to look at the transfer case shifter. If it says H-N-L then it is full time. Some say 2H-N-4L or 2H-4H-N-4L which, of course, mean part time 4WD.

My 1987 is a Jap spec HJ61 with square headlights and the same body/dash as a FJ62 in the states. It seems in 1990 Toyota had both the 61/62 and the 80 series. I have seen pictures of both. There was probably a months cutoff date somewhere though where they didn't overlap.

last 61/2 body was made in 12/89(except Venz), but were sold as 1990's. I have seen some mention of the 80 series showing up in oct 89 in some markets, in the US I think it was 8/90

Wonder if yours was late 87 and fell under the square headlight 62 series, otherwise not sure why?

Of all the cruisers you have owned including your 502......... which would be your most favourite driver??

I recall 8/87 as the 1st sqaure headlight 61-2

intersting how most markets got the 3F in 84/5........we keep using the 2f up till the start of the 62, wonder why they didn't just go with the 3f when everyone else did? AH..................the 3f prolly never had a smoged version and the 2F had been smoged for ages in the US, so Toyota prolly said............why bother making a 3f smog version. Shame as the 3F I suspect would have been a great motor.

Here's something else to ponder... my chassis number for my 1989 cruiser starts JT1W0HJ6000

Does that mean I have an HJ60 - my lights are square so I thought I had a 62. Maybe 62 is just a US thing and the rest of us (maybe just the diesels) were still 60s in 1989?

Jim, Thats strange that your vin is HJ********. I thought that the "H" stood for Hino, the engine manufacturer. The "F" being for the 2F or 3F. Also thought that the numerals 0,1,2, were the different models. I would have to look into that if it were me.

As far as drivability, My fJ62 is the better driver, plenty of power, 4 wheel discs, etc. What bothers me is as a daily driver is that it is so far from stock. Everything has been modified . I keep my binder of all reciepts in it so if something happens, I will know what part # to buy. Most fixes will be easy on it though. Everything is very straight forward.

If I had to drive across country right now, I would take the HJ61. All stock and really good fuel economy.

Landpimp, what do you think the build date is from this tag? It is the only one on the truck.

November of 87 production, so its a 88 model year so its the same body style(cept high roof) as a US fj62.

BJ42 The b is for the 3B engine as is the H is for the 12HTmotor while the J is the chasis designation I think?

Pimp, please check again, I think the "A11" refers to the plant where Landcruisers were built. Many Japanese domestic market cruisers were not production dated.

Couldn't have been built 11/86, making it an '87? I admit I'm dipping in the Koolaid without knowing what flavor it is... but I'm a bit bored.
