Hello, ne member here. Last week, I flew down to Orlando, purchased a very clean 1982 BJ40 and drove it back home to New Jersey. 1,100 miles and it was a really great drive! It started right up every time for the three days I spent driving but just after I got home, it was a little hard starting and there was a lot of soot right when it did start. A few days later (today) I tried to start it and it won't. There is a lot of soot when I'm cranking it over. Where do I start with troubleshooting? I'm definitely not a diesel mechanic :) Thanks in advance, any help is appreciated

Easiest thing to start with is to disconnect the EDIC. Go from there.

"soot in cranking" as in black smoke not white smoke? if so check the air intake. make sure it's not clogged.
