FJ40 & manufacture date is 12/79. Replaced speedo cable, lubed sensor end in tranny. All works well up to dash, but Speedo still does not work. I guess that is a plastic gear inside. Do I have to crack the tranny to solve this problem? Any other options? Thanks in advance.

Been disgusted in another lately on another thread. The driven gear can cause this problem and does not require pulling the transfer case to inspect or replace.

The part the speedo cable screws onto at the tcase can be removed to expose the nylon gear. There's a bolt that retains a tab that locks the threaded portion into the case. Just search speedo gear, or speedo stopped or something like that.
Don't get to technical. The search looks for words, not sentences.

with the speedo cable removed from the transfer case, use a drill and attach inner cable to drill run drill in reverse and does the speedometer work then?
you state it is all good up to the dash but then it is brought back to the transfer case, I'm unsure where the issue is, you need to isolate the problem

You also need to make sure the inner cable is engaged with the speedo in the cluster.
