1980 Corolla-need help!

I'm trying to help out a friend that was given a 1980 Corolla. It has low miles (90k), and is a one-owner. Originally, I was just going to give it a tune-up, change fluids and replace the battery and muffler. When I went to get the car to take it to my house, it would barely run. It had been sitting for +/- 8 months and the gas was bad. So I drained the tank, replaced the fuel filter and drove it. It ran poorly, but it got me home. Since then, I replaced a bunch of bad vacuum lines, and put a kit in the carb-yes it was full of debris. The problem being that it's still not running correctly. No power and erratic idle-sometimes it will die. I replaced the rubber fuel lines and the filter. No change. I could use a vacuum diagram if anyone has one, and an exploded carb diagram-since the one with the kit was basically worthless. Anybody have any ideas on other things to check? I should mention that the friend who ownes this is basically penniless, and so this is all gratis on my end, so yes, I would love to make it someone elses problem, but financially, it's not possible.

Have you checked for a vaccuum leak(using starting fluid or carb cleaner)? I'm assuming it does not have points, since it's a 1980, but is the rest of the ignition system in good working order(I couldn't tell from the post if you had done the tune up you planned to do, yet)?

I have done the tune-up and I did find some bad vacuum hoses that I replaced. The intake bolts were loose and allowing a vacuum leak, but I tightened them and stopped it. Someone suggested that the weights in the distributor might be frozen, but they were fine. The timing is set correctly, and I can see the timing mark advance when I rev the engine. I'm convinced it's in the carb, wether it's an adjustment or two, or I did something wrong when I put the kit in it, I'm not sure. I just scored a Haynes manual on Craigslist for $5, so when I get a chance, I'll see if it has anything to offer.

It sounds like theres still crap in the carb .
I would take it apart and then shoot carb cleaner trough everything with ports.
I had to do this with my daihatu after it sat for a few months waiting to the fuel tank to be fixed. I found crud in the idle and main jet ckt and the power valve was sticking .
two cans of carb cleaner and an hour all was good again

FYI:
I took it to a friends shop. They disassembled it and soaked it overnight in carb dip. He told me it had so much crap in it that I'd have never gotten it all out. Oh well...now it runs great and the owner got it back today.
