I'm looking for an '80 - '83 FJ40 in CA, but am open to widening my search to other states. My only concern is passing the smog check in CA, which leads to my question....Were the FJ40's delivered to California any different than the ones delievered to the other 49 states? In other words, additional smog equipment?

Thanks in advance.

John

I bought my '82 from Texas and had it shipped into CA. To my knowledge, it had never been a CA rig. It passed the first time, and again on the next subsequent round of bi-annual tests, but I took a risk on bringing it not fully knowing if it would pass or not. In retrospect, it probably wasn't the smartest way to do it, but it can work.

According to this link: TLC FAQ - 15.1 40 Series Production Timeline , there was a seperate CA model introduced in 09/73 (probably for emission related reasons?).

I will defer to the more knowledgeable cruiser vets on this to confirm.

My 78 FJ40 is a Federal vehicle registered in CA. As far as I know you just need all original smog equipment in place and hopefully an experienced and knowledgeable test person.

No real specifics here either, but both my '77 and '80 were federal models that I bought out of state. Never had a problem with smog.
