I'm new to the site and need some advice and would enjoy reading your comments.

I take delivery of a 1976 40 body-on restoration next week. The truck is 95% stock (wagon wheels, am air intake). This will be my second 40. I bought a 79' in high school (1993) but couldn't afford to keep up with the maintenance so I had to sell it in college. The day it sold I promised myself that I would own another cruiser. I'm an idiot mechanically, nor do I have enough time, to go with a project vehicle which is why I went with a cruiser that was freshly restored (original color, interior, mechanics, no rust, straight frame, everything works, etc.). I bought it from an exp. 40 restorer, not from an outrageously expensive custom shop. My plan is to keep the cruiser for as long as I'm alive and as near to stock as possible. It will be garaged and driven weekly. Hard top on in the winter, bikini & SOR top in the spring & summer. My wife and I have 2 boys 7 and 4. The boys are going to need a rear bench seat, and I would like to have a simple radio/2 speaker set-up but more than just the factory am radio (current empty radio slot). Power steering is being added for the boss.

With trying to stay stock what do you guys recommend I do about a radio, speakers, and a rear bench seat (safety is top priority)? I would love to find a confer bench seat. What do you think of SOR's metal speaker boxes that go under the front side kick vents? Should I go with a tuffy console or a shafted radio? Also, I live in Birmingham, AL does anyone have a contact at or experience dealing with Southern Off-Road in Pelham?

Thank you for reading. All comments are welcome and appreciated.

Congrats on your purchase. Welcome back to the cruiser community... :) I am new myself and had some of the same questions. Answers will come soon for sure. This is a great community with lots of great advice for all... Post up some pictures of your new rig... We all love to see what members have especially if they just bought one...

Congrats again...

welcome to the Forum … new to 40s myself … can't offer up any suggestions re the seat, but I'm sure there are options re the radio that won't mark up your truck … your 40 sounds like its a nice ride and I for one agree with trying to maintain the OEM integrity … looking forward to seeing pics of it ...
:)

I am in Hoover. Where in Bham are you? I bought my first 40 a few months ago ('75/green), and would enjoy meeting for coffee sometime. I have three kids (6,4, and 10 mo.), so maybe we can exchange ideas. Pm me sometime.

Rear seat

I took a rear seat from a TJ Jeep and mounted it in the rear of my Cruiser. The seat has a solid round bar on each side. Took a piece of angle, and welded a piece to slide over the bar onto the angle. Two bolts hold it in. Fits perfect between the fender wells.

Thank you for replying. It looks like I have a line on a confer bench seat but if it falls thru I will try 1BADFNFJ's idea of using a TJ bench. Thoughts on CCOT's rear bench?

I will post pics as soon as the carrier drops it off. Below is a few pictures from the seller. I look forward to reading everyone's opinions and ideas about the cruiser.

Sig191144, I live in Ross Bridge. Hopefully we can get the cruisers together over a tasty drink. I will send you a PM when mine arrives. Thank you for offering. I look forward to meeting you.

Volfan,

That looks an awful lot like the truck I'm building, only yours is finished. Looks great. Some people thought I was nuts years ago when I put my confer bench in backwards. My two girls were little back then and they loved looking out the back instead of looking at the two front seats. I did that for the view and for the fact that their heads were under the roll bar and safer that way. Consider it.

C, I'm going to hang on to the jumps for when the boys grow out of the bench.

Rainman, I will consider it, thank you for the suggestion. I read your thread. The rig your building looks awesome. I'm amazed at the number of incredibly talented owners on this site. I must admit I feel like an embarrassed infant compared to y'all. It took me a year to find a turn key reasonably priced cruiser. You guys just build what you want. Thanks again for the idea.

Don't feel so bad. It appears that you have a truck now that most of us would love to have so be proud of that. Just get involved with some locals and learn as you go. Most of us had to learn that way. I may have missed it in the thread but where did you find the Cruiser? And this may be asking too much but what did you give for it after that long year of searching?

Hey volfan, I think we crossed paths the other day!
I was in a lifted white 80-series with a tube front bumper, crossing 150 on stadium trace, you were heading East on 150.

Hey bham guys, our club meeting is this Wednesday at Mugshots in Vestavia! Come join us! Park on the upper deck.
