For sale;
1974 FJ40, Vin #FJ40176380, built June 1974, Painted Nebula green which is the original colour of this Land Cruiser
76300km on body- cannot confirm this but that's what the odometer says
I bought this vehicle from a fellow on IH8MUD. He did a full nut and bolt restoration which he estimates he put 4000 hours over a seven year period. Everything on this 40 was taken apart and restored and if out of spec was replaced. I have pics of the full restoration in a binder and there is also a thread on MUD detailing the highlights of the restoration. it has begun
This is a 3 owner vehicle that was purchased new in 1974 from SEPT ILES Toyota (original Toyota sticker on hardtop) and lived its life in Churchill Falls, Labrador, Nfld. They do not use salt there, and therefore the 40 was in pretty good shape before the restoration started. I have a pic of the 40 before the restoration. This 40 is a bit of a resto mod using all Land Cruiser parts. Here are the highlights
1985 3B diesel from a BJ70
1984 H55f 5 speed from a BJ60 with a vacuum xfer case
1986 BJ70 rear axle and park brake set-up
1984 BJ60 knuckles and disc brakes
1984 BJ60 power steering box with a BJ70 pump
1980 BJ40 wiring harness converted to 12 volts using all new Toyota spec wire and connectors
1984 BJ40 front seats with 3 point belts and rear BJ70 bench all covered in matching hounds tooth pattern
Centre console from a FJ40 with heater and cup holders
BJ40 manual glow plug set up with functioning EDIC
Paki soft top hoops with a OCDbeetle top. I have original hardtop and sides that are unfinished with glass intact
5 New 31 inch BF Goodrich mud TA's
All body panels were repaired as well as doors and window frame separated , blasted, epoxied and re-welded back together. The floors and undercarriage were coated with raptor tinted Toyota Nebula green. The 40 was base cleared with Nebula Green and reassembled with all new Toyota or repro seals. I have full documentation of this, body was painted in 2010. It is in great shape with the exception of 2 small marks on the passenger rear panel behind the rear wheel, neither down to metal and hard to see, just wanted to be up front and wound not be a lot of money to make perfect.
Everything works as it should and since I've owned it it has been bone dry. No oil leaks at all. It drives very nice and does not burn oil or blow any black smoke. The underside and engine compartment are mint, just as clean as the rest of the vehicle. Never out in the wet and not been off-road since the restoration. It really is like a brand new BJ40. I've owned some very nice cars in my life (Bunch of Triumphs and Porsches) and out of all of them this gets the most attention, all people, old and young, male and female seem to like it. My son says when we drive by people they all seem to smile. It's a happy vehicle. I know I'll regret selling this but as I'm not using it much time to move on.
This vehicle is registered in Ontario as a diesel, and I also have a copy of the ownership for the previous owner that did the restoration from Nova Scotia
Over the past few months I've been following the prices of these vehicles and boy are they all over the place, up to $80 k us. There was a similar FJ40 sold on "Bring a trailer" for $33k US, it was a gas 3 speed with a non original engine, mine is a diesel 5 speed with power disc brakes, steering plus lots more. It's hard to tell what people on eBay are getting, but my price seems to be on the lower end of what people are asking.
Price in US will be $35000.00 and Canadian will be $45000.00. This could change if there is a big up or down in our in our dollars value.
I have no problem bringing it somewhere for a PPI as long as it's somewhat close by, I'm in Ottawa. I always go and look at vehicles I'm buying before I make the final deal, even if it's far away, I encourage others to to do the same. If you see this 40 in person I'm pretty sure you will not be disappointed. This was the only vehicle I've bought that was in better shape than described, I'm very picky and the man that did the restoration was the same, he was an aircraft mechanic by trade.
