Hello Mud,
This Land Cruiser belongs to the family of someone my wife works with.
They asked me to take a look at it and I thought it was neat enough to post up here.

Edit: Keith has just been diagnosed with leukemia and his wife asked if I could see about getting this sold.
Send me a PM or drop me an email at wagongear at gmail dot com

Price drop to $6,000 or make an offer, she is going to need it gone.

If this were a 60 or 80 series I could advise accurately on the price, but I'm not a 40 series expert.
I'll answer what questions I can.

Lots more pictures posted in this album here:

It could almost have been a survivor but it's had a handful of odd "mods" done to it, a really cool truck nonetheless.
It's unfortunately got what I can probably say is one of the worst exterior paint jobs I've seen. :p Everything was just sprayed down.
There were also some boat rollers mounted to the roof, the rear one is still in place, and it has an odd auxiliary fuel tank rear bumper as well.

There are lots of dents and bruises but nothing major, it has the infamous rear quarter diamond plate covers, but as near as I can tell the metal actually seems to be solid under there, the lower lip is still in place and I can't feel any holes.

I could find no holes in the floor boards anywhere, and nothing other than surface rust where the paint has worn off from use.

Frame has surface rust but is solid, overall it's a solid truck, especially considering it's age, take a look at the album pics.

I didn't drive it, felt no need to, I heard it start and run, drove around the yard just fine, nothing alarmed me, but I see trucks of this vintage as something you can't be concerned about the mechanicals on, didn't even bother looking at the milage, i'm sure it should all be gone over, but it seemed like most everything was still there.
(come to think of it, I didn't even double check to make sure it was actually a '68)

It really has not been driven much for the last 10-20 years. It's been stored inside since 1983. You have to consider that I'm coming from the east coast; but it's the nicest non-restored 40s I've seen, even with the terrible paint. :p

Lots of other things to note, but since it's not mine I'll let the pictures do the talking.

Still here, lots of good offers but nothing has come of it yet.

A couple weekends ago we had a chance to head down there and unburied it from the garage. It is a great vintage truck. She started up on the 3rd try and after about 15 minutes of check-over and warm up I drove her up and down the street for about 20 minutes, what a blast.
Had to remember how to shift a 3-on-the-tree but after that it went great, all seems to function, 4wd engages etc.

Notes:
When I first pulled her out there was virtually no brake fluid in the reservoir, but absolutely no drips of any kind on the concrete where it had been parked. I topped it off and found that the first pump was week while driving. A post-drive check showed the level had not changed, something needs to be addressed there, might be as simple as a brake bleed. Brakes are a sealed system though, so low fluid has to mean a leak somewhere.

I tried to double check the VIN but the plate is just unreadable. I would have had better luck if I wanted to take the battery out. As it was- some WD40 and a rag on the plate and a flashlight could not give me any numbers to go by other than "40" (I knew that much already :-p).

Lights all work, but not all the time.
It was a bit hard to diagnose without some competent help but it seems like the front marker lights go off when the lights are on (hi-low works) the rear marker lights work in both cases, as do the turn signals (front and back) but the right rear turn does not flash when the headlights are on. Basically all the lights work, but not in all combinations.

I think that was the extent of the bad I could find, drove great, such a blast bouncing around on that thin seat with the big steering wheel in front of you. (steered great btw, surprisingly easy compared to the other non-PS 40s I've driven, but they all had wider tires).
