My 1967 FJ 45 has a Chevy 327 v8 engine and SM420 4 speed transmission and a Toyota 3 speed transfer case. It is switched to high range, but winds out in top gear at about 40 mph. It's geared in a very low geared rock crawling mode. I need highway speed capability. I'm exploring all options. I'm in the New York City area. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts, solutions or experience with a similar situation. Thanks. Rob

It does not sound like it is in high gear. You may be stuck in low gear.

Maybe to previous owner changed the gears in the transfer case or you have a crawler transfer case installed also.

Easiest option would be to swap in new transfer case.

Good luck with your 45, post some pictures.

I agree with Joe... something is not right.
Has it EVER been right or is this a new-to-you vehicle? What does the previous owner say if if it is new-to-you.

Thanks for any posts so far. I picked up the truck without direct contact or info from the previous owner. I'm learning about the truck as I go. Can anyone suggest someone in the NYC metropolitan area who would be a good mechanic to figure out this transmission/transfer case challenge. Presently, the truck is about 1 hour out of NYC, Upstate. I also can be contacted at 917 847-8611
Thank you. Rob
