This truck is SOLD!!
I have decided to put this on the market. I don't want to but I have to many trucks/projects and this one has been sitting for nearly 8yrs. I need to free up some cash for another project too.
Here is the low down....
2616 Nissan Patrols were sold in the USA from 1962-1969. Out of that about 950 were soft tops. These trucks have a cool and neat history that is very similar to the Cruisers. Roy Rogers was a spokes person for the trucks in the USA during the 1960s and he was given a Patrol for his advertising work. The 60 series Patrol was the first vehicle to cross the Simpson Desert in Australia in about 1962. The Patrol was used by the Indian military from the late 1960s until the 1990s. They manufactured it in India and it was called the Nissan Jonga. They have been sold all over the world in just about every configuration you can imagine yet we only got 2616 in the USA!
This is what these trucks look like stock....
For those who do not know....Patrols have been THE main competition for the LandCruiser since the 1950s. They are very similar trucks in nearly every way.
The Patrols came with a big 4L inline-6 rated at 135hp at 3600rpms and 245ftlbs at 1600rpms. It was a heavy duty built engine with 7 main bearings. USA Patrols came stock with a water proof package which is odd because it was rare in the rest of the world. The package allowed for up to 3ft fording dpeths stock. They also came with a full boxed ladder frame that is super stout. The tranny was the low point simply because it is a 3spd with no syncro on 1st & rev. However it is very stout. The t-case is a twin stick and super bomber. Early axles ran a tracta-joint in the front and in the mid-60s they went to a birfield, diffs were always 4.11s for this series of Patrol. Front, rear and side PTOs were available. Windshield folded, doors lift off, rear doors are half doors and they have kick/windshield vents.
I bought this truck from a guy in Silver City, New Mexico back in 2003ish. It is an original soft top Patrol with all the soft top hardware which is damn hard to find these days. In 2004 I sent it to a hot rod shop to have the resto started. I dropped about $4,500 into the resto shop to get the project under way. The resto shop tore the entire truck down to the frame. Everything was bagged and tagged and labeled, every single nut and bolt. The engine was cleaned and stripped to the block. The frame was restored including a bit of repair work to the #2 crossmemebr which is common on these trucks. The tub and firewall was also restored. Rust was cut out of these two body pieces and new steel welded in. The shop used lead to fill not bondo. After about $4-5k spent I ran out of cash and so got it back from the resto shop. I then put the truck in a storage unit where it has sat since. The frame was shot in high dollar Dupont chassis black, the body pieces were shot in high dollar Dupont primer. The diffs were also cleaned and shot in the same Dupont chassis black. I have a detailed file of the shops work and all the photos from that too.
There were slight changes in the Patrol during the 1960s. Actually for the entire 20yr run of the 60 series Patrol there were many small changes. However in the USA one of the main changes was the doors. They went from an early style handle to a later style. They also went from a "true" half door to a full door. This 64 Patrol has the early half doors which can be seperated to give you a low door while to top is off. It really is super cool and was only found on Patrols for about 4yrs!
I have been into Nissan Patrols heavily for nearly 20yrs. This was going to be my pride and joy, my Sunday driver. About 10yrs ago I started saving all the best stuff I found for Patrols. In the last 10yrs I have had 6-8 Patrols pass through my hands, at least 6 of those I tore down and parted. I saved every single cream of the crop part from all those trucks for this project.
Here is a list of what I have.....I have not dug into the stash of parts for years but it is large. I am listing this stuff by memory. Everything is boxed up and put away. In the coming weeks I will dig into the stash and provide a more complete listing. At about the same time I will be listing it on Ebay.
-Marks 4wd of Australia 5spd tranny: Marks made this gear box during the 1990s for the old Patrol but it has been out of production since the late 90s. This is a custom case using Nissan Atlas/Cabstar guts. The Cabstar is a big 1.5-3ton forward cab truck. It bolts directly to the stock bellhousing and t-case. It has a low 1st gear and of course the OD with 5th. Stock Patrols came with a 3spd that is not syncro'ed on 1st or rev. This 5spd is fully syncro'ed. I bought the tranny in 2007 while I was in Australia. They have become pretty damn hard to find, even in Oz! The one I have is in excellent shape. Parts are easy to get since it uses the Cabstar/Atlas guts. Nissan Diesel in Texas can likely supply any parts needed if you had to rebuild this tranny in the future. I also have Patrol friends in Australia that can assit with clutch selection and things like which pilot busing to use.
-1 1/2x original soft top frame: You would be lucky to find one of these let alone more then one. Basically it is unobtanium!
-Brand new in the box vintage Warn free wheeling hubs: These are 1960s Warn aftermarket hubs that were made for the Patrol and installed by the dealers. As I say, the set I have is brand new in the box!
-PTO winches: I have 2 complete winches. These are Koenig winches that were installed by dealers here in the USA as an option on Patrols. I have one PTO box which is made by Nissan. It has a stock shifter and a good knob, I also have all the prop shafts. The winches are not super hard to find but the actual PTO box is basically unobtanium!
-H260 rear diff: USA Patrols came with a C216 front and rear diff. The numbers indicate ring gear size in millimeters. I have a non-USA H260 1-ton rear diff for this project. It is the same ratio as the front and drops right in. The H260 is the only old Patrol diff you can fit a locker to. Both an ARB and a Detroit can be fitted to the 1-ton diff if you modify the thrust block. With the 5spd and big rear diff driveline mods will be required.
-Various OEM parts: I have numerous OEM parts all boxed up and put away. At least $500 in parts if not more like $1000. Seals, gaskets, bearings, sensors, switches, ect.
-Lots of cherry hard to find parts I have saved: Things like a box full of glass turn signals and tail lights which are super hard to find. Glass map light covers. Various original clean dash knobs. Nice steering wheels. Nearly perfect emblems. Spare gauges. Several hard to find water proof dizzies, one is nearly perfect. All the stock body pins for holding the soft top down. Spare bellhousings and clutch assemblies. Ect ect ect.
-Set of original 16" rims: These are the correct stock 16" rims for this year of Patrol. I have 5 of them.
-Several fuel tanks: Both the early and late style which are different sizes.
-A brand new set of floor pans! They will take a little work to fit since they are designed for late 1970s Patrols, ie trimming.
-Tons of spare parts: Everything from stock 3spd trannies to spare t-cases. Seats, engine hand crank, ect ect ect.
-Books: I will send with the truck a complete set of original manuals, a mint owners manual and at least one parts book.
I could go on and on about this truck. Basically what you are buying is the complete 64 soft top truck and also a huge load of stuff to finish the project and keep on the shelf as spares. This is my last 60 series USA Patrol along with 10yrs of hoarding parts for the project! Make no mistake this is a project! It will take a lot of work to finish not to mention thousands of dollars. I now have a Cruiser, an 83 Patrol and a 1977 Patrol Ute so this project is way to far out for me. The economy is also hurting my plans and projects!
Believe it or not body parts are available on the internet for these trucks right here in the USA. You could finish the body resto pretty fast if you bought new body parts such as doors skin, fenders, ect. Being a soft top there is way less body to mess with to finish up the resto. There is even a low gear set available in Australia via a guy who had the set cut for his Tuff Truck G60 Patrol. Cost on those last I checked was $2,000-2,500. Regular maintenance items are still available for this truck, I already have all the hard to get stuff! Search Ebay to see what kind of parts you can buy without a hassle. I can give you a contact for getting the factory soft top replicated, several have been done out in California and that was my plan. I tried to get a OEM soft top canvas off Ebay Australia years ago but was beat out by another enthusiest, he bid me past the $1,500 mark! Or you could simply go with a modified FJ40 top.
Several nice Patrols sold recently on Ebay for $20,000ish. They were not perfect but were very nice, they had none of the items like this truck will have, ie 5spd, PTO, 1-ton rear diff, soft top, ect ect ect. You could take this truck several directions. Petronix makes a kit for the water proof dizzy and a Weber carb is a bolt on job. It can easily be the nicest soft top Patrol in the country. My plan was to have it be super nice body wise and all correct and original yet still be able to cruise down the HWY (5spd) and also do some nice long back country trips, ie dirt/gravel roads. I was planning on 34" rubber. I didn't plan to fit a locker or crawler gears but you could do that to this truck. It is all about money!!
I will take SOLD for everything. I have a clean title in hand. I really hate to do this but need the cash so no trades for this truck. I want to see it go to an enthuisest so if you plan to hack it up for a crawler I won't sell it to you! The truck is located in Jackson, Wyoming.
How the truck sits now....
You will notice in the above picture the rear leaves and hangers are s***. This was a PO thing, my body guy didn't know it was not stock. You will need to cut off the hack leaf hangers and weld on new ones. I have stock rear hangers I cut off a frame. I was going to then just have Alcan make me new leaves in about a 3" lift. They have made leaves for the Patrol before so no biggie.
The vintage, new and original Warn hubs.
How I found it in New Mexico
Kept inside and full of parts, there is more then you see here that goes with it!
