There wasn't mulit viscosity oil back then. You can run whatever you feel comfortable with either 10-30 or 10-40. I run 20-50 in my F. My f and 2f's have always liked it the best.

I run straight 30, only use the things in the summer anyhow  I also like to see a the higher oil pressure at idle.

If it hasn't been run for a long while you should run a real short oil change interval for the first time anyhow, so try some cheapo 10-30 to clean it out and see what you have for pressure. Remember that the oil filter is a bypass filter, so not all the oil is filtered, so get your oil clean and keep it that way.

started this post last night shortly after the tread started got a phone that lasted a hour and forget about this. Well your already got your answer but I'll still throw in my two cents.

Nothing wrong with 30 weight. I've been running Castrol GTX 10-W-40 in my 1968 FJ40 more years than I can remember. 68 had a F145 while your 64 has a F135. Both have the poor F engine oiling system. In 74 Toyota improved the oiling system. Before that time the oil split right after the pump. One went to oil the engine and the other went to the filter and back to sump (oil pan) The secret to making these old F engine last is keep the RPMs as low as possible. Toyota ran ads back then that stated these cruisers could run down the highway at 85 miles a hour. Don't believe it.

Did I say hour I meant to the ads read all day. What was the stock tire height, 26" 27" plus 4:11 gears? So what would the RPMs of the engine be at 85 MPH? I guessing around 4,500 RPMs. But that's just a guess. I'm not knocking the F engines. Just never thought of a FJ40 as a race car. I've never replace a F or 2F with a V8 in all the years I've owned FJ40s. Just something nice about climbing a hill with a F engine/one barrel carburator at 400 RPMs with plenty of torque.

I definitely take it slow, smooth shifting etc.
I keep the rpms in their respectable range.
The F motor is a beautiful torque machine, just my pace.

Thanks for the info on oil weight, I have a tendancy to be over cautious, i like to take care of what i have :)

Thanks again guys!
