Have you tried to lower the windshield yet. I think you'll find you have to remove the defrost vents from the windshield to get it to lower. I have a late 62 hard top model with the defrost vents. While it had hinges to lower the windshield there is no rubber bumpers on the hood for it to rest on so Toyota didn't really plan on the windshield being lowered. Not one of Toyota's better designs for the soft top model. Unless your's are different than the ones in my 62 hard top.
If the vents have to be removed I think you should inform Toyota of a factory defect. If they won't do anything about you might as well just give it to me. I have a few defective parts of my own and it would be right at home with me![]()
the problem is the the defrost vents stick way down in the cowl...and is a real PITA to fold it down...not a good design
I have not lowered the windshield as of yet.
Do the defrost vents not close? I have not tried that yet.
I think it might be ok, as the rubber bumpers on the hood might keep it elevated enough so the vents to not physically touch the hood when lowered
I will check it out on my lunch break![]()
Well did you check it out? Contacted Toyotayet? Do I need to plan a trip to Portland to take it off your handsBeen four years since my last road trip up that way. It's the right time of year too. Did I say I lived in Oregon before I know all about the nine months of grey skys

yes oregon can be rainy, but summer is basically here!
Supposed to be 70 and sunny all weekend!
70 We'll be lucky if our lows get down to 70 for the next six months
If you can find a second set of the defrost vents you could cut those right at the top of the cowl. the top piece should stay in place with the top screws. then place a piece of thin metal across the openings on top of the cowl. Lift the windshield up in place and trace the openings. Then cut the two holes and weld or solder the lower defrost duct to those openings. The opening in the bottom are bigger than the defrost ducts. Trace that opening from the bottom with the piece in place. Weld something on the bottom of the piece that will keep it centered. With the piece of weatherstripping on top of that piece it should stay in place. Now you can just pop down the windshield any time you want. Plus you didn't destroy anything that was stock. If you want you can put your old defrost vents back in and your back to OEM stock. If you havent guess I've thought about this before. My problem is any cruiser I would do this to doesn't have the opening in the top of the cowl, all pre defrost vent cruisers. Which means cutting holes that weren't there. I can come up with the windshield and defrost vents, just don't know if I want to add any non-stock holes![]()
