1963 FJ40 Factory Soft Top [ID]
SOLD!
THIS IS A 1962 SOLD IN 1963. VIN 2FJ40 15401
According to the FJ25 Forum experts, the '2' ahead of the FJ40 indicates the year of manufacture was 1962.
After too many years of just keeping it running, but never making the time to fix it properly, I’ve decided to sell our FJ40.
It’s located in Boise, Id.
Runs, drives, stops, but needs work to be roadworthy.
No working lights, missing turn signals, will include a wiring harness from a 60’s LV and turn signal switch assembly.
The tires hold air, but that’s about it. Have a set of early hubcaps that are included.
Original straight six, with new water pump and big window single barrel carb. The transmission was a side-shift 3 speed, pulled that about 20 years ago and put in a 4 speed, about the same time I replaced the centered rear diff with a later offset rear axle. I pulled the 4 speed out a few years back and put in a 3 speed column shift that was in my 65 FJ45.
The generator crapped out around 2000, rather than rebuild the generator; I chose to put in an alternator.
I cut the muffler out in order to get the 3-speed linkage installed and have not put a new one in yet, so it’s a straight pipe down out of the exhaust and that’s it. I have brackets for the OEM muffler, and was going to order one from SOR (~$150).
The body is fairly clean and rust free. It has the original drop down tailgate and highly desirable LandCruiser stamped bezel. I attempted to paint the bezel a while back and did a horrible job. I put an un-stamped bezel on in the meantime, but will include the stamped one with the sale.
The top is not OEM, it’s a Pakistan built (poor quality), replica for later FJ40 models. It looks period-correct though. I pulled one of the zipper pulls off while takeing these photos, the windows are cracked and there are some mouse-chewed holes in places. I have spare vinyl that came with it. I’ve a set of soft doors for a later FJ40 that I was going to modify to fit the FST door opening, they are included.
The PTO winch, is ‘ornamental’ it works but is in rough shape, some of the casting was cracked and I welded it. The pillow block housing (carrier bearing for the drive shaft) is cracked in half, I’ve got a new bearing and was planning on brazing the housing together. Repaired the pillowblock and installed the driveshaft, PTO is functional.
Great early FJ40, not too many factory soft tops are still around.
