17" FJ Steelies on my 05 4R...

Should I venture into doing some version of the steelies or should I just stick with the stock alloys???
I have 2 complete sets of 5 which leaves me with 2 extra rims after setting up the trailer and 4Runner.
How hard would I really have to hit the rim in order for it to be damaged beyond use?

I don't wanna complicate things, but this is looking to be a lot of extra work and money! Thanks for your feedback!

Honestly, I was just throwing out ideas. If you are doing mostly highway and moderate off-road I would run the alloys. If you have two spares it sounds like you are set.

No that's cool...I'm of the mindset that you should be as prepared as you can. It's just that we're reaching the $10k mark on just model specific stuff for our rig. That doesn't count the expedition trailer or "expedition" gear or the cost of the 4Runner itself. Oh well I knew it wouldn't be cheap...guess I'll just man-up and move on. :D I'll just put the steelies on the bottom of the long list!

How are you getting down there?

Everything will be shipped down in container by boat...Mexico is just to dangerous to drive through. :(

What you are doing sounds awesome! When are you moving down?

Thanks, we are excited!...it's just lots of work on multiple levels. We were just discussing the date of the final move a couple days ago and it's looking like January 2014!
We are doing this just as a family so it's not like we're big ballers with loads of cash. Lol! That said it takes some doing...you have to sell everything your not taking and pay off all your debt if your gonna do it right. IMHO.
Looking like we're going down in Nov. this year to buy a house in town and we will use our 12acres there to start a coffee plantation, but eventually we will need more land for a good crop.

Ok that's probably more info than you wanted. :D

Pulled the trigger on the steelies! We went with 17x7 FJ steelies and had custom rim stiffners made. Now just need to weld them to the rims and mount!

Will be matching ones on our expo trailer too. We are also going with Dyno Beads vs weights.

Well we got the stiffeners on the steelies but I'm OCD... annoyingly so...anyway I didn't like the way they looked so I bought more OEM steelies. So on to the pic!

I love them personally. The center caps don't seem like there going to fit over the wheel spacers, but I've got to double check. We did end up trying the Dyna beads and they do "work", however they still allow for a shimmy in the steering. I'm going to have them removed next week and go with sticky weights inside the rim.

I think it looks just right the way it is - center caps wouldn't look utilitarian enough.

I ran some the Toyota 16" steel wheels on my old Tacoma and they balanced good with regular wheel weights. I spray painted them black to match the wheels and you couldn't tell they were there.

Love the look... I ran those and a 275.75.17 Nitto on my 2nd Gen Diesel for a few years loved the combo. I am running the 16" and going to set back up to 17" and the Nitto's when my bighorns wear out.

Is the backspace on the fj steelies any different than the 4runner alloys? I've got some rubbing issues with 255 75 17's and no wheel spacers. Trying to find a solution that doesn't require wheel spacers.

The backspacing on steelies is about 1/2" further to the outside of the rim and the rim itself is 1/2" wider so you'll only gain about 1/4" more space away from the wells. Unless 1/4" is enough to clear whatever your rubbing on you'll likely need aftermarket wheels for clearance.

Hope that helps!

Helpful as always. Seems everything I want to do you've already done which really makes it easy for me. Thanks.
