Question, please. Did a search but couldn't find a definitive answer. Remember some posts about 75% width criteria etc but can't find them.

I may be able to pick up some really cheap 16x7 wheels with adequate BS. Am planning to put together a second set with offroad tires. Am thinking 285/75 at least, so 11"+.
Would these tires work with a 7" rim or is that too questionable for offroad? What about when airing down?

add: well, if 285 won't work, what's the widest that will?

TIA for info

I don't know about this, but I am picking up steel wheels for the LC at my dealer for $103 each today -- their P/N is for the LC

sidetrack: how wide are these? conical lugs? hubcentric?
and now, back to original thread... :D

oh, FWIW, the BFG site mentions a rim range of 7.5 - 9" for their 285/75R16 TA KO, so 7" is a bit under. But I'm looking for experienced feedback here, what would this mean if the rim is a bit narrower, in practical terms? Consequences?
TIA

I recall a few posts stating that a 285 will fit a 7" wide rim. Might be hard for the guy to get them on there, but should be able to do so. As far as airing down, you shouldn't have any problems.

If you're really stressed about getting the right rim, why not get OEM steel rims and appropriate lug nuts? We both know a certain person who can supply them :D

Or...you could take the opposite extreme and do what I did -- go into a tire and wheel shop (in my case, America's Tire Co) and tell them you want a set of steel wheels for your cruiser. They had a selection for me to choose from...and I got lug nuts from them for the new rims. Was a pretty easy process.

I've run 33/12.50/15's on 15x7 wheels for years without problems. I believe I was told that it makes losing a bead a slight bit less likely when aired down.

I believe it also keeps/makes the tire a little taller but also thinner than on a wider rim.

Narrow wheels with a wider tire will be hard to get on and also less likely to pop the bead. "Poor man's Beadlockers" comes to mind. That being said, for the deal...go for it.

Bingo.

I just bought a set of '04 tacoma wheels for my 60. 16x7, I'll put 285/75-16 Firestone's on them. Should be great trail/multi use wheels.

I'll have to put wheel spacers on the hubs, but I'm OK with that.

anybody knows if the Tundra, Seq etc wheels have the same diam bore as ours?
(105 or 106mm, is it?)

I PM'd Dan about those taco wheels, he said they would be too small for the 80, but OK for the 60. I don't know about the Tundra or Sequoia wheels.

My tyre dealer told me that the widest tyre I can legally fit to my 16*7 rims is a 265/75 16.

You will probably get it to fit, but you may have problems, especially on low pressures.

That is just plain wrong. At low pressures the narrow wheel will hold a wide tire on better than a wide wheel will.

local tire place said "no problem putting 285/75 on 16x7"
Costco tire guy said "don't know..."

FWIW

They always say "dont' know" or just NO if it's not the OE size tire / wheel

eh, it's not for a cruiser, it's for my custom-built trailer... !!!
