Okay, wife's 2000 4Runner hit 150K recently and I'm wanting to push the reset button on fluids and stuff just to level set what has been done at this point to be prepared to take this baby to 200K miles.

Here is what I'm thinking and would love to know thoughts:

1) ATF drain and refill. Calls for Dextron III, but I'm a big Lucas oil fan. Will I be okay replacing with Lucas ATF (2qts)?: Lucas Oil Multi-Vehicle ATF : Lucas Oil

2) Fuel filter. Man what a debate to do or not since Toyota calls it a lifetime part. I'm leaning to do it, but I hate to mess with it if it doesn't needing touching. Thoughts?

3) Front and rear diff oil (plan on using Lucas 90W oil)

4) Transfer case oil (plan on using Lucas 90W oil)

5) Obvious oil change

6) Obvious tire rotation

7) New air filter

8) Clean MAF sensor (done recently to get the CEL off)

9) Power steering flush (recently done when was leaking and replaced with Lucas PS repair which worked great by the way)

10) Spark plug replacement

This sounds like a solid weekend of work and I'd like to know thoughts and any items I should put on my list to get this baby to 200K miles!

You have a 3.4L V6?

1. With 150K I'd suggest replacement of the ATF filter in the pan as well. Here is a detailed writeup. Dropping Pan And Flushing Transmission
The Lucas ATF would be fine it's compatible with the Dexron III.
Also should look into a dedicated trans cooler. Look toward the bottom of this page for the Strawberry milkshake section.

2. Here is the write up I did. I'd suggest changing it.

3-8. All sounds good.

9. Here is a flush write up.

10. Another write up. :)

Also, has the timing belt/waterpump ever been replaced?

I'd replace the PCV valve also.

Awesome! Thanks for the response. I've already read a lot of those links you sent. Thanks for writing some of them up...they are super helpful.

Yes 3.4L V6

The fuel filter is such an odd item to me that I debate on. So many folks say it is lifetime and I should touch. Dealer said the same thing today, but at some point I do consider it a filter and the can't last forever. My wife is really gentle on the car so it hasn't seen much mud / dust. I tend to lean on the side of going on and changing it for comfort, but who knows.

yea timing and water pump are in good shape.

I need to find out more about the PCV valve so please share if you got anything there. I'm taking it to a local shop tomorrow to have them look at a weird bearing noise coming from the rear. Today I also made a $120 run to Auto zone for the various fluid and other items I mentioned below (biggest being making the move to a K&N air filter) so I think I have all my items except spark plugs which I completely forgot about.

I'll knock out as much of this as I can this weekend, but it might spread out into next weekend.

Thanks again...and I'll check back later if anyone has any other thoughts.

I noticed a huge difference between starting and accelerating after the fuel filter change. I think the reason Toyota considers it a lifetime part is for liability and the release of hydrocarbons to the atmosphere.

PCV valve is easy and cheap.

Find the water outlet at the middle top of the engine and look a little left, you will find the pcv valve.

I'd do lots of reading and searching online before breaking that K&N out of the box. IMO, it's a waste of money. The oil is also known to cause runability issues with the MAF sensor.

I changed front/rear diffs, transfer case, and tranny all in the same day. I ran the same Lucas in every thing for simplicity. There was a noticeable difference for the better. The fluids I drained were in almost new condition. The tranny had some minor metal in it.

Got a large amount of this stuff done. Still need to do spark plugs, rear diff oil and tire rotation. I held out on spark plugs only b/c I was tired and the rear diff b/c I now have it in the shop having them look at the rear diff. Something back there is making a load noise (i'm hoping it isn't the actual diff). I didn't want to chg the oil back there only for them to have to drain it.

All went well except front diff was a pain to get to and I had a tough time getting the drain plug to bust off (man it was tight).

I think after the shop fixes the rear end I should be all set for a few more years in this 4runner.

I'm also going to check out PCV later on, but it seems pretty easy and cheap.
