Today I aquired an 85BJ70 and the one thing that is nagging me is that it has dual batteries...85's were 12 volt systems...could these two full size batteis be twin 6 volts? Did they ever come from the factory with dual batteries as an option on 12 volt systems? I doubt she added this as I purchased it from the original owner ( an old granny)...Sorry if it's a stupid question, but I'm learnin the diesel thing as I go

Look at the voltmeter. If the range is 0-16V it is a 12V model. If it says 0-32V it is a 24V.

it is a 12V system and they use twin 12V batteries for the drain of the glow plug system and the starting...

Two batteries is optional on all models.Extra battery trays are available also with the threaded holes already there.

Like Wayne said it is 12v system and exta amps needed for starter and glow plugs. I am pretty sure all 85 BJ70's that were in canada are 12 volt systems.

You should be happy you have a 12 volt system, the 24volt systems sound cool until you need to put any accessories in you Cruisers or new some new bulbs, and lots of luck if you want to put any trailer wiring on a 24v system.

Cheers,

Michael

Yup, like all the guys have said...12v system with two 12v batteries in parallel. More amps for the large drain devices, mainly the glow system.

24v is not really that bad, especially up here in Canada. There are plenty of places to get 24v bulbs. I've got part numbers from Toyota, and the H4s are available from Lordco in the Hella brand, which I've been very happy with.

Best part about the 24v system is that it draws half the amps for the same wattage as the 12v system. This tends to make them last a bit longer, although when something like an alternator or starter eventually does go, they do cost a bit more. Running accessories like stereo and alarm systems are manageable if you have some basic electronics skills, and know where to find components. Congratulations again on your purchase (saw your post in BC4x4).
