I have a 12volt 82 HJ47 - Aussie import.

Ran for 3k miles then after the import, I can not get the plugs to glow. I have been following the wrong diagrams and have now started to trace each wire and make my own diagram. I have multiple troubleshooting guides for the super glow system.

In short, I have a relay and solenoid mounted near the front apron. The relay is working but I found a broken wire on the solenoid coil. After fixing that I realized I am not getting 12volts on the coil wires of the solenoid when the key is turned on. The +coil wire goes into the preheating timer. It seems to me the preheating timer gets its power from the alternator? Can you troubleshoot the preheat timer?

Is this the correct diagram for the 10.5 volt glowplugs? I only see troubleshooting guides for the super glow system.

This diagram does not show the two relays, both resistors nor the Pre-Heating timer. I have searched many online manuals not to find a circuit like my vehicle.

What month was your 82 built?

I have an 11/82 HJ47 from Australia, and that’s a 1983 model year.

I ask because what you are describing sounds like a modified SuperGlow system. Mind you, my knowledge of the non-SuperGlow systems is limited to what I’ve read in the forums in threads by @lostmarbles and others, but a quick search of the parts sites suggests what I suspected, which is that there is no pre-heating timer part number prior to 10/82.

The diagram above complies with my understanding of the earlier glow system: a resistance coil in-line with the glow plugs which is dash-mounted that gets red hot as an indicator that the glow plugs are ready.

What are the part numbers of your pre-heating tuner or the glow plug relays?
Share some pictures of your setup and folks here can help diagnose.
 
A lot of my paperwork was lost during the customs inspection. I was told it was 1981, but I noticed the Queensland registration sticker on the windshield states 1982 Toyota. Model - HJ47RP-KO Frame - HJ47-022671
Bosch 10.5V 0250202 (250-058) Glowplugs. Timer Pre-heating 28521-68030 H12v. This 2H has the oil centrifuge on top of the oil filter. I believe this dictates it is an older 2H.

This black box is what I call the Relay. I cannot see any markings but it is definitely plugged into the factory loom. It is engaging and has 12 volts to the GP resistors.

This picture shows what I am calling the Solenoid. No part number or markings. The wires go into the factory loom. The coil wire on top is ground, and I found it broke off. When the coil wires are disconnected, I get no voltage across them. One wire goes to ground on the intake, and the other one goes into the Timer under the dash.

Here are the two resistors before the GP bussbar. I have the two wires off for tracing purposes, The top post wire is blue and goes to the solenoid. The black wire connects to the front of the resistors and goes to the relay.

This is the plug that goes into the timer. It has fewer pins than the diagrams I have been looking at for the super glow system.

None of the glowplugs show open. I am assuming I do not have the super glow system since I have 10.5Volt plugs. I have one GP that is not coming out with normal pressure, so I am leaving it in until I have more time to deal with it. I have been reading up on the Wilson switch but would prefer to sort this with factory wiring since I know my son drove it for 6-weeks before it was shipped.

Great information I appreciate the effort. Is an 11/82 build considered a 1983 model? So this is a super glow system with 10.5v glowplugs? I see on one guide where my timer part number is associated with "earlier models."

I did some more tracing, and I can see that the coil on the solenoid is getting voltage but for just a moment. My DMM flashes and then goes back to zero. If I put 12volts across the solenoid for 10 seconds, the truck starts right up with no ether.

With this information, I think the timer is at fault. The voltage sensor bar and wires look very new. The wire to the water temp sensor looks new as well. The relay is also actuating and putting a voltage across the resistors. I am assuming the solenoid is supposed to engage and power the plugs with the key then once the engine starts and the alternator sends voltage to the timer which disengages the solenoid and then energizes the relay putting just 5 volts across the GPs until the engine is running smooth. Is this correct?
Where should I poke around next?

11/82 is definitely a 1983 model year—your VIN is only 22 before mine. Probably built on the same day!

28521-68030 is the earliest pre-heating timer, but recall that prior to the SuperGlow system there was no pre-heating timer. That part number came into being in 10-82, as evidenced by the parts list posted by @sved

This is a SuperGlow system, and despite what I said above, it doesn’t look modified now that I see the pics. In your pictures above, the first relay is called Glow Plug Relay (For After Glow) on the diagram and sometimes referred to as Glow Plug Relay #2 or Sub (28610-54090). The second photo of what you’ve called the solenoid is the main glow plug relay (28610-54080).

The EWD can be a little confusing because it covers multiple markets, so both regular and SuperGlow systems are represented in the one diagram. You can ignore the Glow Plug Relay in column 2 and just refer to the two Glow Plug Relays in column 3.

I ordered a 1982 Toyota Commercial vehicle electrical wiring diagram from eBay after Sved pointed out a seller in Germany. I continued to troubleshoot electrics and then decided the glowplugs need to be replaced. I ordered a set from Terrain Tamer in Australia, They showed up this week. I installed them, cleaned up the buss bar and she started right up.

I am going to guess the company that shipped it tried to jump the glowplugs with a 12volt jumper and burned them out. They then replaced the glowplugs with 10.5 volt set they had on hand. A mystery I will never figure out.

The one thing I have to continue to troubleshoot is the glow light on the dash went out and the voltage on the buss bar stayed at ~7.5 volts until the engine fired. The voltage on the battery is not going up so I suspect a charging problem now.

As I understand it, in the Super Glow system, the glow light on the dash is tied to the Water Thermo Sensor, attached to #5 and #1 of the Glow Plug Timer in the diagram above (this is a separate sensor from the one used for the temp gauge). When that sensor reads at a certain temperature, the first phase of the glow process is complete and the dash light is turned off.

Based on @bgennette 's great thread, the 7.5V you're reading is correct and it is the result of increased resistance as the glow plugs heat up:

"As the Glow Plugs heat up their resistance increases (to around double) and this also decreases the current to 10V / 1.3R = 7.5A."

Just for clarity, Australian vehicles are registered by their build date. My 11/95 HZJ75 is a 1995 even though it was not registered till 96 .
I think the US is different in this regard.
