ok to start it off to all the guys who said that the 12ht will bolt straight into my bj40 with pre 84 60 series engine mounts are wrong.. i pulled my b series diesel engine out to put the 12ht in and soon found out that the mounts are out by 25cm atleast, even when the motor is right up against the firewall. now i have to remove the old engine mounts and do it all custom even the gearbox crossmember as some of you told me that would bolt straight up too.. anyway has anyone actually done this conversion before?? i know of one guy on here with a red bj40 with a 12ht but thats all i have seen and he hasnt replied to my pm's so i dont know where to get the info from??
thanks mitch

I would have thought you would have had to use the 2H mounts from a HJ45

Mitch,

You'll need to use the FJ40 mounts on the chassis and the pre 11-84 mounts on the engine. That configuration WILL bolt up. I changed from a BJ series chassis to the 12HT and thats what it took.
PM me your e-mail adress and i'll mail you some pictures of how my mounts on both chassis and engine are located.
And yes, the HJ47/2H mounts will work too, but those don't have the mounting for the PS pump.

ouch...

hummm, if it is on the internet then it must be true...leason learned.

of course the engine mounts will need to be changed
the tranny will not work (different imput shaft)
the tranny mounts are different (on the older B enignes the rear engine mount was off the bell housing)
the driveshafts will need to be modified
the rad is different
the shifter "might" be in the same location although i doubt it
the e/brake will need to be modified

shall i continue?
sorry, i missed your original post... maybe it was while i was on a self-ban for a few months...

you know it...
a 1HZT into a FJ40 and a 1HZTI into a HJ60...

thanks for reminding me of my... ummm... fun times?

<self imposed exile...i like that terminology>

What did the 40 go like?

you know the saying
get in
buckle up
hold on!!

it takes on a whole new meaning. the bloody things feels like a very well running gasser!!

from Calgary to Ontario pulling 3000 lbs we returned a constant 27.5 mpg Canadian. ability to quickly accelerate and pass if needed and QUIET...

as far as i am concerned it is the BEST swap for a 40 series or a 60 series. no sensitive throttle issues, parts availability for the next 20 years, quiet, powerful and wicked on fuel AND the ability to make you smile!!

i am installing a fiberglass body on the truck which means i will be removing the engine again so i can do a detailed post of the swap at that time.

yeh mate i know everything on the net isnt true but i thought most of the info on this site is.....

and i got a 5 speed box with the 12ht so i dont need to change the input shaft. and i know about the driveshafts and its only common sense that the handbrake will need to be changed...

I would have to agree, I think a 1HZ is the universal Toyota swap for anything that you are going from 4 to 6 :D.

I plan to swap my 3bII with a 1HZ in my BJ70RT at some point, I just can't get enough of the 1HZ. I drive the BJ42 less and less (especially with the BJ70RT, it is no comparison) but If I don't sell it soon, maybe someday I will do a 1HZ in that as well, I bet it would be sweet. Now if I can just get a hold of some 1HZ's...In the US:p

Post some picks Wayne:)

Cheers,

Michael

I'd be interested to see the post where folks say a 12ht would bolt right up to a BJ40. I expect we are going to find a reading comprehension problem.

One way or the other, building custom motor mounts is two banana. Quityerbitchin and post some picks of the swap.:flipoff2:

Anyone know if a BJ42 5sp crossmember would work on his 5sp?

the H55F will use the same crossmember as the 83-84 BJ42 but he does not have the pieces on the frame so he will need to buy the "L" mounts and either weld or drill and bolt them to the frame...

I can pretty much concur with Crushers/Wayne's notes:
I did this conversion into my 1982 FJ40. Used troopie mounts. I had to graft the P/S tab from the '60 mount. 60s and 40 H mounts use different engine mount rubber (locating pins are in different places). I fabbed some mounts for the '60 radiator and used custom rad hoses....Yes, I also had new driveshafts, modified the crossmember, modified the steering shaft, new tranny floor cover. I was spared the B versus F&H input shaft difference since I used a new H55. The list continues...but is was amazingly time consuming and fun...

BTW: The engine is too tight so you can't REALLY use the mechanical fan & fan clutch if you want A/C.....I discovered this the HARD way over 100 miles into the desert (but that's another story and lot's of $$$ later).

Hope that helped.

Check my rebuild.

The 2H & 12h-t will bolt straight in as long as you get the engine brackets off a HJ47 or HJ45 that had a 2H in it and the rubber engine mounts to suit.

The engine brackets on a 2H or 12H-t out of a 60 series or 75 series won't bolt straight in.

If you want to use those brackets then you have to move the chassis mounts, also the engine mounts (rubber) have the locating pin offset.

You also need the bracket plate for under the gearbox but that depends of what year chassis you have and whether it was a diesel or petrol FJ to start with. That should be ok if it was a BJ40 but it might need moving.

PS. Your current front & rear tailshafts maybe the wrong lengths as well.

Sorry to bump this old thread, but OP, did you end up fitting the 12Ht to your Bj?

Or has anyone successfully done this conversion to a BJ chassis without welding new mounts?

Sorry
The bj40 will need new engine mounts plus what's talked about above.
I would rather rebuild the 3b and add a good turbo charger then go to the trouble of changing everything to suit a 12ht engine. The HJ47 will plug and play a 12ht engine but that's the only 40 series.

the FJ45 will too, you just have to get the 2H engine mounts
