Hey, I have an 85 BJ70 (12 volt truck), and have future lighting and other electrical upgrades that are going to be tough on my factory alternator (45-50 amps I think?). What are my options to get a larger alternator into the truck, 100+ amps possibly? Thanks.

Use more efficient electrical components.

HID or LED lighting is a great way to go, less consumption for the same lumens.

The engine uses no power to actually run, so you have bit of an advantage there when compared to a gas powered vehicle that needs to run an ECU and an ignition system.

Thanks guys. Are there any Toyota made alternators that output 100+ amps? Thanks for the lighting tips, my main concern is for the two amps I am planning on running (each one is fused at 120 amps). I will not be running them full out, but maybe I will just try it for a while and see how the truck handles it.....

I am not looking to run two alternators, just upgrade mine. I might look into getting mine rewound, thanks.

I am using a 110A toyota alternator on my 70series. Supposed to have been same as you can find on the 4.2litre 80 series trucks. Genuine toyota part and its actually stamped 110A. A little minor work on the support bracket.

Alternativeky why dont you look at the Mean Green alternators.

Perfect, thanks for the heads up! Will look into the Mean Green ones also.

Installed and runnimg for about 5 months now.

separated vacc pump . ?

I don't believe there is a vacuum on the alternator. My engine is a 1kz. Checked the old alternator, as I am keeping as a spare and it just has electrical connections.

The 3B alternator has a vacuum pump attached to it,80 series vacuum pump is gear driven by the engine, prob the same for 1KZ.

Thansk for that simon....was wondering if I had posted correctly and I could not be assed to go out and crawl under the lc as its 10pm and I am enjoying a couple of cold ones.

..........and I just noticed I can't edit my posts...

Sorry to dig this one up, but I was wondering if it is possible to swap in a domestic alternator (like a GM one), and look into a separate electric vacuum pump? Thanks

Hey 1985bj70. I'am in the same boat as you. I'am running 2 good amps that suck a ton of power, lights ect. The factory 40 amp alt dose not cut it. Duel batteries helped some, but the old head lights still dim when I'am pounding a good tune. If your going to run a system off the original amp, a compacter is a must with dual batteries. I had found a electric vacuum pump that some of the Delica boys have converted to but it seemed to be a helper vacuum pump for high horsepower low vac hot rods with massive cams. My feeling was it would be a bad mod considering it was only a helper vacuum pump and would suck if it failed. Ford used a v belt driven vacuum pump for years on the 7.3. Is your alt driven with dual belts?? If so you can find a mechanical vacuum pump driven by a v belt leaving you a a spare v belt slot to add a real alternate. My solution on my 2lte was to add a alternator. I still will use the factory alternator for the use of the vacuum pump only and since I removed the the a/c years ago I have a v belt slot for the new alternator.
Now on to the new alternator. The mounting I chose was the cs130 from Chevy it was just a matter of what would fit in the spot I have. I purchased a 250 amp Nippon Denso hair pin alt with a machined cs 130 outside case. This bad boy will do 250 amps max at1800 rpm and 160 amps at 800 rpm if need be. Power problems solved. I'am just starting to build my brackets ect. I will shoot you a pic when it's all done in a few weeks.
Take Care.

Good deal, thanks pradocruzer! I need to dig around under the hood and see what exactly my setup is right now. That sounds like a killer alternator you have there, can't wait to see the finished install. Cheers!
