Guys, I don't know if I'm just noticing or what, but my oil pressure seems low according to the stock gauge. It's running between 1/4-1/3 of the gauge even at higher RPMs. I may get a little higher than that first thing on a cold morning. It has ~124K miles in the V8. What do you guys indicate?

Thanks for the reply and comparison Jim. I'm kinda leaning the way you're thinking on that. May be lower than when it less miles, but it's still moving and active as the RPMs change, just less movement. My 80s (1996) with the straight six indicates about 3/4 of the gauge scale and moves around that as a center point a little with different RPMs. It has 179K! Love 'em both, but they are different vehicles.

My 80 series oil pressure reads higher than my 100 does and the 80 has 100k more miles. It seems to be normal for the 100 to be in the range you specified.

I guess over the years all of mine would somehow get my attention and I would watch the oil gauge instead of the road,It will take all I got to not to notice tommorro.i have always drempt of owning a landcruiser and three weeks and 644 miles ago I bought a white 2000 in Austin while on a business trip,I got out of my tundra test drove it maybe a mile paid cash only because I hadn't talked to my banker so it will be a slow process getting it caught up on neglected every day maintainace, the previous owner never sent me her records or the master and remote keys.o well I should have been more cautious but it's a keeper and I sure like the sweet spot when I leave the house in it at I guess around 10 or 15 mph i wake it up,it surprises me every time I get in it.good luck to yal from david in ft.worth

Well, the pressure gage is somewhat ambiguous as to the actual pressure reading. Kind of like the fuel gage. You know you are low on fuel when the gage reads 1/4 tank, but the actual gallons remaining usually isn't 1/4 of the tanks capacity. You just don't want it to read zero or never move off of full.

The owner's manual states something like 1/4 at idle up to 3/4 at higher revs for the oil pressure.

I'm sure someone on the forums here knows how to hook up an actual gage and get the pressure reading in p.s.i. and compare to the numbers in the FSM.

My truck runs perfectly and the 4.7L really doesn't have a history of the oil pump crapping out. I had an '04 Sequoia with the same engine and the oil pressure gage sometimes showed something other than zero. It was a known problem on those trucks so I didn't worry about it. Never had a problem for the 130k miles I owned it.

I guess my opinion is that if it's not broken, then don't try to fix it.

Happy your found your truck. I know it's exciting, but slow down and take a breath in between sentences.

Seriously, congratulations and welcome to the forum .

Mine with 132K on the clock typically reads 1/2 at highway speeds (2500 rpms), sometimes less.

At idle I'm lucky to stay at 1/4.

It disturbed me when I brought it home the first time but from what I read its all normal.

Same as mine at 240K miles, generally a little over 1/2 at cruising speeds.

I'm at 130K...5/8 up the gauge at crusing speed (2000 rpm), maxes out 7/8 up around 3K or so. About 1/4 up at idle.

Bad oil pressure sensor are not unheard of. I had to replace one on my LC a year or so ago. I was concerned as the readings were really low and inconsistent. New sensor fixed the issue.

YMMV

I can say one thing about the oil pump
Its really good as my friend said he get he's rpm up to 6000 without problem
Most of cars it requirs to replace it to get any higher rpm's

Thanks for all the input guys. This forum is a great example of folks from all over the world working together to figure stuff out and share. Goos stuff. Some of you were saying your gauge would indicate 1/2 to even 7/8 with higher RPMs, I think mine used to do that and that's why it is catching my attention now. I can't get it to go over the 1/2 mark no matter what. I may start with a new sensor and get back to you guys with what happens. Hopefully I don't have something really going wrong. The other piece of info I have is it really sounds dry in the top end (rattling tappets) for probably a good 30-45 seconds at first start after sitting at night... this is also a newer sound for the truck, but it is very cold in the mornings now.

I meant to say "Good Stuff" in the third sentence above...

Glad to have found this thread.

Just bought a 97 FJ80 with 197k, and discovered the oil gauge reads just below 1/4 when at idle, then rises to about 1/2 to 3/4 while accelerating or at cruising speed. So for most 80 owners, this is normal huh? My 87 FJ60 didn't do this, and that had about the same milage. So what gives? Dirty sensor?

That sounds about right

My 80 series is just as you state. 1/4 or so at idle, moving to about 3/4 at highway cruising.

I was concerned with what appeared 'low' to me as well on our 06 LX. It never gets much above 2nd bar. It's garaged (warm) and on Mobile 1 5W. The Service Manager at my Toyota dealer tells me that is normal for these. His wife drives a LC of the same vintage and has identical indications. I still don't like it though... ;-)

These gauges are inaccurate. They will vary from cluster to cluster. If you are concerned, the best way is to tap in a mechanical pressure gauge to get a true reading.
