Awesome change in the LOOK just with those tires. Should be a sweet ride for your students. Getting some step sliders would be a nice add.

I haven't found a post for a build up for looks without the need for serious off-roading. I think this will be a useful post to others looking to do the same thing.

Dwon, sorry about that, but just as a little background, this forum is primarily about function, not looks. Most of the people on here are seriously using these vehicles. You won't find a lot of the "bling" "spinner" "Escalade" crowd on here (which explains why you couldn't find any such threads). Just a friendly FYI. :grinpimp:

For more cosmetic opinions, you might want to check out some place like clublexus.com.

Again, I apologize for my off-topic posts and contributing to the hi-jack of your thread.

Who wants bling?
Did you read my build up list? I'm putting all the same "serious" off-road products on my rig as the rest of you. The difference is that I'm doing it for form not function. (well OK a little bit of function, I'll be a weekend warrior with my rig:D, but I don't live in the Australian outback or anything).

Besides, you live in California (according to your profile), who cares if my tires will work in Africa?:) I'd rather you tell me where I can find some nice trails in the Pacific NW (I'm from Portland Oregon), or what types of suspension you have in your LC.

Knowing that 285.75R16 tires will fit without any mod and not cause rub, is one of those things I see people continually post again and again, and no one ever seems to answer. They talk about what tires they have, but I haven't seen anyone answer the question about this size tires. So now we know. They don't rub! (OK, maybe they rub if Monkeys attack in Africa;p).

No worries, I just want to keep my post on track because this is such a great resource for people doing build up projects.

If you read what I wrote, I was trying to depose the idea that we should all use tires rated for European and African environments that another poster had put forth. IOW, I was agreeing with you, the tires I might use for certain California trails are not necessarily the best for use in other environments, and vice versa.

Personally, I don't care where your tires will work, since they're for looks only. And they look good. But I think Goodyear Wrangler MTRs look better (my $0.02).

In fact, to really do it right and get the tires proportional to the size of the truck, you should chuck those 285s and get true 35 inchers. To do that, you'll need to raise up your truck with something from here:

I can tell you from experience, having put the ARB Deluxe Combo bar on, your front end will sag about .75 - 1.00" and the ride and handling will suck (IMHO). This is without a winch. Even after cranking the stock T-bars to normal, you'll get excessive dive when braking and your front end will wallow like a beached whale. IMHO, with the additional 100 or so pounds of a bullbar up front, I think uprated T-bars should be mandatory, even if you set them up for no lift. I think the handling (and safety) of the the truck are at stake.

Just out of curiosity: Why do you need a serious-offroad-capable-looking-rig-even-if-it's-not-really-capable? (BTW, it IS ;))

As someone hinted, taking off the running boards is an easy and free mod, and it greatly improves the free height (both visually and effectively). So to say, it looks more lifted.

Maybe a roof rack with some typical offroad accesories: hi-lift jack, sandplates, even a spare wheel; that kind of stuff usually associated with an expedition-type 4x4 vehicle.

And a snorkel, of course.

We have a name for blokes like you here in Aus :censor: ;p

you will need a really BIG UHF aerial or two swinging off that big heavy fuel sapping steel bar you are getting ;)

Oh, and some big expensive lights. Do you guys get Lightforce over there??

Well, if it's for business purposes, I don't see anything wrong in it. And I'm sure you Ecksians have a lot of Crocodile Dundee-style shops and stuff, just to attract tourists ;)

I lead Photo Safari Workshops where I take my students out into the wilds of Oregon, Washington, and N. Cali. This is going to be my lead vehicle and show piece for my business. Say what you want, I've got a family to support and a vehicle that gets people's attention is worth more than any advertising in any magazine.

As far as the body wrap, you'll see it in a couple days.:flipoff2:

As far as the side steps, I need access to store gear on the rack and the oem don't hang any lower than the ARB so I'd rather spend that money on my son.

As far as not being off road capable... Do you really own a LC? If you do then you know they come from the factory off road capable. I'm just adding some features that are more practical for off roading and looks of the rig.:bounce:

Just for the record, it is your rig, your money, and your decision to add function or form to it... so why be concerned with other opinions.

If advertising is your main goal, you are doing the right thing...

Almost every featured magazine rig is primarily built for show... and very few of us can truely justify the investment in our rigs based solely on function alone.

Dwon, why don't you just cut the BS and just show us the build up?

First you claim it's for looks, and now you're adding that it's functionality based too.

Make up your mind.

I think we all can wait until your parts arrive and you install them.

Oh, hell, don't mind those hardcore fellas! I have 285s and they have gotten me where I want to go so far and look good doing it. OBTW, can you teach me how to use one of these damn digital SLRs?..;)

I think you struck a nerve because you actually have a legitimate purpose for your mods, other than personal pleasure. You may be hearing from guys who wish they could write off their mods as a business expense too.:crybaby: Depreciation is a wonderful thing.

I'm impressed that you chose to do this with a LC rather than a H2, which is the common alternative. It shows you have more class.

Can't wait to see the finished product.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be a jerk. My dry sense of humor doesn't translate well to text.

I'm worried about the front end with the new bar, but I want to test it out stock and then with shocks and if it's still bad I'll add the Tbars.
Thanks for the advice based upon your experience. That's exactly what I'm looking for!
For ride comfort with 4 adults and gear what type of OME rear springs would you suggest regular or heavy?
