My Floppy Mirror Syndrome progressed to Fallen Out Somewhere on the Road Mirror Syndrome. So I have to replace my mirror assembly.

I have wanted heated mirrors for my 80 for years and have wondered if it was possible to adapt the 100 series mirror to work on an 80. It’s also a little larger than the 80 mirrors.

So I picked up 100 series mirror to see whether it could be done. Stay tuned...

I purchased two 100 series mirrors 20 years ago for the same reason. Once I removed the original mirror housing I came to the conclusion it would never work as the fitment was a completely different size and shape. You can purchase a heating element to add to the 80 series mirrors but requires getting new glass/mirror because there was no way to remove the base from the glass without it breaking. I gave up on the project. Might be possible to create an adapter using a 3D printer which wasn't available at the time.

I had assumed that a 100 mirror would not bolt straight on to an 80.

When I got one in hand it was obvious that it wouldn’t.

What I had wondered is whether a 100 mirror could be adapted to an 80 mirror mount.

They both have a similar post and spring mounting setup.

I believe that it may work, but i got pissed when i couldnt get my 100 mirrors to fit when I bought new ones to repair my JDM FZJ. Turns out the angles between RHD and LHD mirrors are totally different, and the 100 series power fold function doesnt work with the 80 either, just in case you wanted that feature too.

Maybe you can retrofit just the mirror assembly itself and retain the heated feature without having to fuddle with the 100 series mount and arm....

well, I guess we won't know unless we try. I would totally be down to give it a shot if you have any luck

One of my biggest complaints with the 80 series is the mirror. I never broke a mirror on my old tacoma (98) and I wacked a lot of tree's with those mirrors. They would always just fold it and be fine if I hit something with them. The 80 series mirrors seem to be much more fragile. I have broken 3 by hitting tree branches. I just replaced my drivers mirror with this aftermarket mirror from amazon.....

I know it isn't OEM but at $50.00 dollars I am actually very impressed with the fit and function. It was a straight plug and play install and it works as intended. I figure it would be hard to actually downgrade from the oem mirror.

So the 100 mirror doesn’t quite sit flush on the 80 base.

If this edge was radiused a little, the 100 would sit flush.

The catch is diameter and shape of the breakaway mechanism is different. Short of milling down the 80 base, I didn’t see a way to make it work.

This is where I tapped out. Well now I know. 100 series mirror will ALMOST fit on an 80 base.

Thanks for the review and link. I have been leery of cheap non OEM mirrors. Good to hear from a user. Will order one.

it is possible and not over difficult. i fitted heater elements to mine years ago. i also retro fitted JDM electric folding mirrors while i was in there.

That was a pretty penny..... I just got new folders for my JFM FZJ. A grand shipped to my door.

how’s you retrofit heat? Any insight?

I have a sub-question for this mirror thread; (I did search too). Did the FZJ80 mirrors change at all from '94- 95-up? I know there are some oem available again. I got on the McGeorge site and it says mirrors for 1994 are discontinued. Part # 87910-60190-03 I thought the last 2 characters indicated the color code? When I search 87910-60190-G0 It says it will not fit the 94. I feel like I am taking crazy pills. They are basically 200 bucks though which makes the Rock auto ones or others pretty attractive.
The heated feature is nice, My work Tundra has them.
