100 series hub nut

I'm looking into replacing my front bearings. I got confirmation from Cruiser Dan that the front hub nut is 54 mm, same as the 80 series. In case anyone wanted to know (thought it might go into Drivetrain sticky).

Thanks to you (Hank14) and Crusier Dan for confirming the wheel hub nut size. I made a note of the size in my FSM a few weeks ago from a posting that thought it was 54mm but wasn't positive. Now I can erase the question mark. I want to lube the front wheel bearings one of these days and it is so frustrating to start and then not have the right tool. I did look in a couple of catalogs and the largest metric socket listed was 50mm but 54mm is exactly 2-1/8". I'll probably buy a deep dish just to sure I can reach the nut.

dang, that's a good price. OK even with shipping ($7 for me) and 1/2"!

Thanks Bill. A picture is worth a thousand words. Along with wondering about the depth of the socket; deep dish versus standard, I was wondering about the wall thickness. The robustness of an impact socket is good but, as most of us know, sometimes the thicker wall makes the OD to large to fit a recess. It looks like that could be the case on the hub nut, even with a standard wall socket. Instead of swinging by the local discount tool shop and picking up a 2-1/8” six point for $5 or so, I’ll go ahead and order the sure thing. A little more effort and hassle in the beginning but probably worth it in the end. Laziness EVENTUALLY results in pain.

As you say, the wall thickness on this socket isn't like a typical 3/4" drive socket. However, you won't be cranking down on it to need the strength of the heavy socket. If you've got a 3/4" drive set, I suspect you could certainly use a 2-1/8".
