Mud crazies will tell you hose clamps will put CVs out of balance.

Crazies

I clamped both sides with regular auto store clamps. No vibration from being out of balance. On the 100 forum, someone sells rolled edge clamps that are not supposed to tear the boot. I don't have any tears in mine from the regular clamps, I just waited too long to put them on.

Iron Man 2 inch lift ordered. Will watch closely and determine if diff drop is needed later.

Install party for sure as I have no skillz;).....ive read Nolen's thread on his build and the torsion bar stuff might as well be chinese...im no good at math, im dyslexic, and I have the patience of a 4 year old.:meh:

Not if you get the 22 mm box end ratchet. You would be an idiot to cut your truck over that.

Be prepared to sacrifice the old shock to hold it.

I stab a large screwdriver in it to hold it.

One busted knuckle per side when it releases.

I just replaced the rear shocks this weekend on the 4Runner. What a pain! If yours have a top post instead of an eyelet, prepare for a fight. I read up on it, and several people mentioned breaking off the top post by jarring the shock back and forth. I don't recommend this, as I just ended up bending the top post and making it harder to get out.

My recommendation is to have a second set of hands to help with removal. If you can get a socket on it, more power to ya. A wrench did not work on mine

You may want to start spraying the top post threads with penetrating lube now. That'll help a lot!

Good luck!

Yep, that's the ticket. One of my upper rear shock mounts was squeaking, and I held with one hand / tightened with the other. I just had an open end, but if I'd had a box end rachet, things would have been a LOT easier.........(I said "easiER," because it's not gonna be easy any way you do it - if the truck has been down south its whole life, that'll make the biggest difference).

Of course, rather than cutting into the rear floor, you could always unbolt the body from the frame / lift the body off, thus avoiding any cutting

Anybody got a better number for Jacque at TOD than the one on the website...? 2 days of dialing and i get busy signal every time.

OK, need some advice...

I ordered the CV/Boot rebuild kit and just got a price to install from my local dealership...$700. $350 per side.

I know i can get this done cheaper at my local mechanic's shop...I trust him and use him for regular maintenance stuff. BUT, I'm kinda nervous about anybody but Toyota doing this.

So two questions...Is that price ridiculous, and if so, can a good local mechanic handle it?

you are rebuilding a 40..you can change out 2 cvs!!
