FOB Keys and FSM

David reminded me that one FOB key is not good as the computer is about $1500 if lost.

anybody gotten one of these 1998-2003 BRAND NEW UNCUT TOYOTA LANDCRUISER LAND CRUISER KEYLESS REMOTE KEY FOB | eBay will lowes or the dealer cut the key to match my existing key? there is a thread about programming them so im not concerned with that....any experience with this?

also I have a digital version of the 2004 FSM but I like hard copy specific to my year to carry in the truck. Is there an aftermarket that compares to the toyota version or just go with it? I ask because I bought 2 for the 40 and the haynes is way better than the chiltons IMO

John. I just ordered some of those keys and they sent two extra. I will send one of them back to MS with my folks on easter weekend if you remind me. I would take my new key to a real key guy to get cut for my cruiser. lowes can not consistently cut keys in my opinion.

Mike...pmd you. Thanks for the cutting sources. All better than lowes!

Ace in Fondren did mine. I'll post what I got on the key thing tomorrow from a keyboard.

great, thanks Greg

OMG! Here's my Lowes key cutting story:

I'm moving to a new place this month. OLD duplex. The door locks are OLD. So I take my key to walmarts, they can't cut it. Take it to Lowes, he starts cutting... hands me my new key, I hold the two together to inspect.... it's not even the same TYPE of key. My new key would not have even fit in the lock.... I look at him and he says to me, "dat's de closest thing we got...."
I hand it back politely and walk out shaking my damned head.

yeah that's why I was asking where else I could get one cut...esp for my 100!!! I have had similar experiences. Ive had to take a file to a key after their "high speed machine" couldn't make a duplicate.

ridiculous....

Ok, here's what I remember:

2 main kinds of keys. Fob keys like you posted above and regular transponder keys.

If the little key inside the truck light on the dash blinks when you get near the truck with a key then it is a master key. If you don't have a master key to program off of you have the $1K problem. To avoid that, I made a master transponder key that is un-used and stays hidden at my house. I keep only 1 key fob key, since I'm single and am not in the habit of loosing my keys.

The key's are not difficult to cut, but see above for letting just anyone cut it. Anyhow, a good locksmith should be able to cut your key. I called Montgomery to ask about them cutting keys regularly for CLC. They are going to let me know, as they recently made a policy against cutting keys not purchased at their shop.

My transponder keys came with instructions for programing them. It's easy, and not worth the pile of money that folks charge. Sorta like doing the hokey pokey.

FOB stands for frequency operated button..... The transponder key has the "chip" which communicates to the vehicle and allows you to start it. THIS is what im after so I dont end up having to get a whole new computer if lost. (I typically don't misplace keys but with a child, wife and 3 vehicles safe is better than sorry)

Copenhagan from 100 series thread on keys, beautiful summary:
"
An original key does 3 things:
A) fits the tumbler and allows start
B) remote door locks
C) security transponder that communicates with ECU

(A) is the metal part
(B and C) are the plastic part

90% of our trouble as 100 series owners is breaking the original key because the metal end breaks away from the plastic end. That means you have seperated function A from function B and C If this is your issue, order a new key blank(A) with empty clam shell from eBay for $10. Take it to your local Walmart and have them cut the key for $.99. Then open the clam shell and put your remote/transponder(B and C) 'guts' in the new clam shell. You are good as new for $12-$15.

10% of our key trouble is that we lose our key. In that instance, you are screwed. On your way to the dealership, pick up a jar of Vaseline! "

I am tracking on all this. I just want to create an extra key with "C" so that I don't have to pay $600 at the dealership for a new key or a whole new ECU! I didn't realize that some regular looking keys actually have the transponder in them......going to test this right now...thanks Greg.

EDIT...my extra key that looks like a normal toyota key unlocks and cranks the vehicle so I assume it has the transponder communicating to the vehicle that the key "belongs" to the truck. SO if I loose the other keys I can still run the truck I would just have to get a new FOB key and reprogram the lock/unlock part? correct?

ok it's just that the manual says the Master key (black fob) does everything and then states the sub key (grey) does everything but the glove box.."valet function"

but the very next sentence is that the dealership HAS TO HAVE the FOB key to make a key with the built-in transponder.

in reality this is incorrect. you could use the valet key and add the electronic FOB key over it to use key less entry. bottom line the valet has a transponder so a new ECU isn't needed to function.

Another reason I don't need a 100 series - I'm too damn old for all that crap. A key is meant to unlock the door and fit the ignition. Does it really need to be more complicated than that?:meh:

yeah, it does. These days the mothfxxxal don't even need to be in the car! It's actually only gotta be near the ignition to crank it.... then it can be taken as far away as needed! Just don't turn off the car or you'll s.crewed if someone else cranked it.

For real. A professional thief has a spare computer and key thingy anyway. I seen it on the TV. Doesn't even slow them down.

This is only a hassle for honest people.
