Hi:
Anybody swapped an 80 series engine into a 100 series or vice versa?
I may have found a 1HD-FTE and am wondering how easily it will bolt into a 1997 80 series. Comes with transmission, but I think drop is on the wrong side, so I would need to bin the 100 series transmission and use the 80 series transmission.

Also anybody know any interesting standard transmissions that will work with a 1HD-FTE other than stock Toyota?

Wondering if they will bolt up.

Hdfte is regularly swapped into 80series in Australia

Transfer case is the same between 100 series and 80 series.

It would be a relatively easy swap in terms of physical fit as the HD series engines were part of the standard engine range for 80 series.

You would need either a complete harness for engine and trans management, plus the dash cluster.
Not sure what else.

Thanks I think the transfer case drop is drivers side on the 100 series as opposed to passenger side on the 80.

The 80 and 100 series utilize the same case. Which is why a few guys on here have been able to bolt the 2uz and A750f into an 80 series.

I am installing a 1HD-FT in my 80 series. It started its life as a HD-FTE but the electronics were removed to go with a manual setup. I’m not aware of anyone running any manual transmissions with these engines other than the Toyota (usually H151 I think). The engine rebuild was just complete and I anticipate my truck will be in the shop in about 10 days to start the actual swap. The FTE is a great engine but an expensive one. The electronics are not cheap and not easy to find in the US. I’m aware of another 80 series with the FTE installed and they used the H151 and it looks factory.

Doe the 1HD-FFTE, FT, have the same bell housing pattern as previous 1HD engines? I guess what I am asking is if I pull a 2007 100 series 1HD-FTE Will engine mounts and bell housing line up same as any other 1HD engine? After that of automatic it would just be a matter of a transmission controller and lower stall speed torque converter? I have my eye on a 2007 100 series rolling chassis with electronics. Wondering if it will line up and drop into an 80 series. From what you are telling me it sounds like it will. I guess it is a different bell housing from1HD-FTE to 1FZ?

Physically the swap is relatively easy, the slightly hard part (depending on your skills) is the wiring.

The swap has been done a bunch of times here in AUS... same as it’s fairly common to swap a 1HDFTE into a 105 series.

Nope the transfer case drop is NOT on the opposite side.

They use the same transfer case and same manual trans.
Auto trans is basically the same family but upgraded with electronics over the years

If you're not afraid of some wiring and retro fitting a gauge cluster, then as engine swaps go I don't think it's a hard one. It's a well trodden road.
