Well I have owned my 80 series for about a year and a half and love it. A 100 came up for sale at a dealership about 10 miles from where I work so I went and took it for a spin. All I have to say is WOW. Way more power, more comfortable more everything. Now on to what I noticed. When I tried to put it in 4lo it was a bear. I assume that is because the PO never put it in 4lo. When it went in 4lo the center diff light started blinking but just blinked. Never went on constant even with the center diff button pushed. Do you think it is because it was never put into 4lo and things just need to free up so to speak or is there something else to be concerned about? The second thing doesnt I guess concern me as much, but the rear diff didnt go in either. Which the rear diff didnt work on my 96 so I took the actuator apart and cleaned it put it back to together only to find out one of the wires was broke. Mine does work now though. Anyways what do you guys think?

Did you stop and put the transmission in neutral before shifting to L?

I can't hardly move my H/L shifter without the transmission being in N.

Mine is a 2001. No locking diff.

Well the rear diff not engaging, more than likely has everything to do with the center diff not engaging, since the stock wiring dictates you can't have one without the other. Was it easy to shift from H to neutral on the t-case?

No it wasn't easy even to shift from H to N. Does the center diff light come automatically when you shift into L, then you use the center diff button to engage it? Does that sound like a stupid question? It has been a while since I used L in my 80 I guess. Better take it for a drive.

Default behavior is the center diff locks once you're engaged in low, so the button is superfluous in that case. The button is only for high range, in fact your 80 is the same way. Now both trucks can have that behavior be disabled with a pin7 mod, but I'd find that unlikely considering the PO never went to low range. Once your CDL is engaged, then the rear locker is able to engage- at least electronically.

If you are interested in buying a 100 you should also look at 2000+ trucks as they came with atrac which actually works really good and since the 98-99 has no front locker and a weaker front diff you might end up saving money by not having to upgrade depending on what you're looking for of course. 2003+ ( I think) gives you a 5sp tranny which is also real nice if you can afford it.

After driving that 99, I am for sure looking to upgrade

Agree. Go for 5-speed if you can.

The diff-lock problems on the one you tried sounds like it could be just lack of use. Might have to be opened and cleaned, yes.
And when the rear has not been engaged because it never got the OK from the center-DL, you might have the same problem there. (The RDL is more likely to get stuck than the CDL)
