As I rack my brain on my next up grade I have to ask what would I improve on over my 80. Higher speed cruising, I take a few hunting trips where the speed limit is 80 so I drive 90+. I would be looking basically stock, nothing larger than 33's with AHC. I know the MPG's will suck but that is a price I will pay. I'm waiting on the carfax etc on an 06 with 130K. Hoping I can get it at $18K which I am thinking is a good deal.

Otherwise, I use my cruisers as hunting, fishing, dogs in the woods trucks that I know will not strand me.

I've loved all my 100's. Really loved my 80 (wish I had kept it). Liked my LX570. What I've noticed as the main difference is that the older models are better looking then the new 200's and the newer the less truck like ride and feel. I like good looking and truck like. If I could of gotten a 80 series with 50k miles rust free I would be good to go for the rest of my life. But I am 66 ;)

I have an 80. Recently I almost bought rs6tofj80's 100. still bummed to miss out on that. since building another 100 costs $$$ I started looking at older 200s. I like them mostly stock with a good lift and tires. now I'm back to being v happy with my 80. it's at 150K, rust free, and running strong. Someday I may go newer but I hope to be able to keep my 80..

I think you can watch the needle drop at 90, as wind tunnel testing was not a huge factor in the 100's design. I'm perfectly comfortable cruising at 60, and have gotten 16mpg highway with stock tires and an RTT on my '06. The 100 will live up to its name and cruise nicely. Then engine doesn't struggle at 75+, but for my sake and hers, I don't like to go much faster.

My 1998 LC handles fine at 100 mph. It tracks straight, and the truck seems to hunker down at higher speeds. feels solid.
Mine is all stock except I replaced the original catalytic converters with EMS. I have stock size tires and new toyota shocks.
It would be nice to have a fifth gear like on the 2003+ models for higher-speed cruising, but my 1998 feels safe and comfortable at 100 mph, provided straight paved roads with no traffic, good visibility, good driving conditions, etc.

I think you'll be pleased with higher-speed handling of the 100-series LC. I think a good alignment and tire balance, stock sized tires, and decent shocks are important in this regard. You will definitely appreciate the difference bw the V8 in the 100-series vs the 6 cyl. 80

hope this helps

I love my 80 also and at 242K still runs awesome, however I don't like the way it feels pushed above 80 on the hwy. Now with the ID and UT speed limit at 80 I feel the need for speed.

The 100 is hands down the better highway rig. I'm coming from a 94 with 2.5" OME medium lift and 285/75/r16 Duratracs to a 06 at 1" over stock height and 285/70r17 Duratracs and the ride is noticeably better and cruises at hwy speed better. I loved my 80 and always felt it was a tight and comfortable hwy traveler but the 100 is much smoother and confident. My 80 was our camping, mountain biking, skiing rig for 10 years and it saw a lot of highway, back roads, and dirt road miles and it handled it all great but the 100 is just more a more refined comfortable ride with greater stability and confidence. With as hard it is to say good bye to my 80 I wish I had made the switch to the 100 earlier. Hope that helps.

Soon to be new to someone

CAP, you in Seattle area, the 80 looks familiar? I would love to find the basic 100 but am looking at the other extreme LX

Yup, Seattle. And I hear you on the basic LC, I got connected with a guy selling a non-nav/non-AHC LC and feel pretty lucky but there are a lot of really nice loaded ones around here and the AHC is pretty neat.

my everyday street driver is now my "street cruiser" a 1998 lc with 307k miles... (140k on the engine) new shocks, 18" wheels & tires, rack bushings, good alignment, added a touchscreen nav radio unit... and it drives as well as anything I have or have had... (except my 930 turbo) I loved my 450lx but not enough to keep it forever... but I built this 98 lc just to have... take the dogs to the lake... launch the boat... ect... never intending to drive it everyday... but I find myself in it... everyday... i even take it over the Harley some days ( i must be getting old).... it is a BRICK in the wind but tuck in behind an 18 wheeler @ 80mph and you all but can take your foot off the gas...
good luck

This is my first LC so I can't compare it to an 80 or anything else. I drive a lot of highway miles with it and while the MPG are not great it is actually surprising that I do get around 13. With that said driving up and down I40 I never feel like I lack power and I am always surprised at how smooth it is given the size and weight. I also agree that at higher speeds it does seem to settle down

Indeed the highway mileage is pretty crummy. I do cruise usually around 75-80 which no doubt adds insult to injury. Even on all hwy trips I am beyond stoked to hit 350 miles before fueling up. Especially since switching to BFG AT KO2's in a larger size.

Wow 13, I don't get below 16 at 70mpg in the 80. I would have guessed the 100 would be worth 17-18 on the hwy. I wishe the 200 looked a little better.

I got 14.4 on a trip to south Fl with the 285's , 2 adults , 3 Kid's and luggage and beach gear running 78ish (mostly hwy and around the Bch town too...)

90 mph+ 100 mph+? "handles great" You guys are high. No. A 100 does NOT handle great at 90 or 100 mph. It may feel great at 100 mph. It may ride great at 100 mph. But it does not handle great at 90 mph. ANY steering input beyond the slightest, gentlest lane change... and you're rolling over and over... and over. Anywhere near those speeds, you're not driving the 100... you're aiming it.

The 100 is an awesome truck. But if you're regularly driving north of 90 or 100 mph AND even thinking about mpg, you're looking at the wrong vehicle. Maybe a Cayenne?

Using my trip computer and I have the 03 with the 5 speed and catback exhaust best I have done with just me in the truck is 15.2.
V8 over the 6 in the 80 is the difference I would assume. But once again great truck for the highway depending on the speed limit I ride around 68-73 with cruise control on...

65 mph is good speed for 100 imho, anything more you just wasting your gas , plus not sure but there is a vibrating feel in 100 when you pass 70mph. if you are cool with that then you're good

agreed - I take my 100 up to the Skeena (2-3,000 miles total) every year and it's the perfect rig for chasing chrome on those rivers. I'm in Seattle by the way, let me know if you want to talk fishing

Shouldn't be...mine certainly doesn't. Might want to get that checked out...

I get 14 mpg on the highway regardless of how I drive (typically running around 75 mph - as low as 65). I get 10 in town regardless of how I drive. Nothing seems to actually affect this thing when it comes to mileage. Well, a strong headwind might drop me down a mpg or two, but really, its pretty predictable.

I actually love this thing on the highway, other than the mileage. Only thing I'd change is to try to reduce the wind noise a bit - not terrible, but noticeable.
