i'm considering 16x10 wheels with 33x12.5 tires for my 94. i currently have the ome 861 and 862, but i plan to move up to the 850 and 863. i like the look, but i'm concerned as i don't see many 80's like this other than the vehicle on the man a fre cover.

if others have this wide of a wheel, please post pictures, concerns, issues and/or modifications.

thanks,
jw

Jw,
I have 17x10" rims on my 96. with 12.5" tires. my back spacing is 3.5" and i have no turning issues at all. with 33's you souldent have wheel well issues, though dont hold me to that. I know my 37's do rub on the fenders, but turn to turn is all good.

CreeperSleeper has 10" wide rims and has had a little bit of an issue with tires popping off the bead at low pressures. Not sure on his tire size, but you might PM him after the weekend .

thanks for the responses.

Project f-80: what was the reason to move to 17" wheels? more options? could you post some pictures of your vehicle? under what conditions do the 37's rub?

C6h1206: i will check with creepersleeper, thanks. in terms of your stereo upgrade, did you add a subwoofer to replace the stock unit?

I went with 17" rims because i wanted to get a set of Kralwers. and they only came in a 35x15 or 37x17. you can also go 39x17 now. it did give more options, I chose wider over narrow for more stability, and a larger tire patch. you loose a little of your turning radius, but if your going big, hitting a curb isint gonna break your rig as it might in a car.
I can only get the back tires to rub under extreme articulation, and full compression of the springs. the will no longer stuff into the wheel wells, though i added a 3" body lift to compensate for that.

I have a few picts here https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=84611

and here https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=81202

btw, i also have a 6" lift. I dont know how high your springs will put you. the turning will still be fine with 3.5"bs,

I'm running 33x12.5x15 ( 10" wide wheels but with offset ) and no problems at all. I also used to run 315x75R16 but those wheels were only 9" wide and no offset, likewise, no problems at all. I went to 33" when I couldn't find any 35's though I did find them only after I had already bought the 33's.

My 1991 80srs had the springs you have now, + half inch spacers at the rear - it had heavy cupboards and a fridge. Those are 15 x 10 inch rims with 33 x 12.5r15s - note the 4 inch wide flairs. The problem with the package was that the rears could touch the flairs on articulation, and rip them off expensively! Of course there are options to avoid this, or you could use an 8 inch rim which will stuff inside the guard. Good luck with your 80.

Thanks for the feedback kalawang and matt 105.

any reason for using the spacers?

my understanding was that spacers changed the weight centering and can cause troubles in suspension and bushing wear, is this correct?

The spring spacers were just to levil the thing up, front to rear - looks better with the rear a little higher than the front IMHO. They gave no trouble, and are still in use in the rear of my 105srs now. They are actually closer to 15mm thick - not that it matters.

10" wide rims are too wide for a 12.5" wide tire

About 4" of difference between rim width and tire width is ideal.

Christ, I used to have a huge hardon for 10" wheels .. always figured I'd get a set when I went with 36's. Oddly, I did not. I can see the sense in sticking with my stock wheels now. I can stuff the rubber fine .. I ended up going with 1.5" spacers with the 36's.

thanks tyler.

this may be obvious, but i'm not sure i understand.

what is the difference in a 10" wheel with no spacers and an 8" wheel with 1.5" spacers? is their a performance advantage that the spacers provide over a wider wheel?

As someone else mentioned, the wider wheel is more likely to pop a bead under low tire pressures (as when crawling over rough terrain).

I may have forgotten that on my partictular rims, I have beadlocks, and have had no problems at all with single digit psi readings.
Also, as long as you dont need to lower your pressure under 15lbs, a wider rim will give your tires more life on the road as a daly driver. they will wear more evenly. Since i live in the city, and have to drive on the road more than the dirt, i chose to go with a wider rim.
The narrower rim will provide you with the advantage of protecting your rims from scuffs and nicks or dents, also they do tend to hold the bead on better when your running lower pressures. Though when fully aired and running on the highway you will wear out the middle patch of the tire before you wear out the sides of the tire because you have squeezed the tire in on a smaller width rim, causing the tred to rise in the middle. where as a wider rim will keep the tire flatter.

Yes that is correctm, thanks dclee.

Thanks for additional info and pictures project f-80. what type of performance, gas mileage do you have with the new engine?
