Hey guys, I could not find the answer I am looking for.

Do the 10% overdrive transfercase gears make any noise or more than normal? I am looking to drop the highway rpm's down without installing another H55f.

Please do not make this into a debate on what tranny is better, engine or anything else besides noise. This will be going into a FJ40, LS 6.0, H42, split case, 4:11 gears and 33's if any of that matter. I am pulling the current H55f out for another project and want to keep the overdrive. I have plenty of power. I like the shifts better in the H42. and do not feel like swapping diffs to 3:70's.

Thanks in advance,
Rob

I have installed about 10 sets in house and have not noticed any abnormal noise - or had any complaints from customers. Something to consider - on the first few installs I did I had to replace the idler gear as well with the Sumo modified version that has a little bit smaller outer diameter, I had issues with the OD gears binding with the OEM idler gear, this was repeated with three separate transfer case builds so I started budgeting the new idler gear into every project. The upside, all the gears besides low range output gear are new. The downside, that idler gear costs almost as much as the OD gear set. (about $365). So that $400 gear set becomes an $800 gear set.
Happy to get you hooked up with either

By the way after a the proper break in mileage on H55F, be sure to change the fluid. Shifting is smooth!

I will rephrase, I like the gear ratios of the H42 better.

We’ve sold and installed hundreds of the OD/UD gears, helped pioneer their application with Sumo. Overall noise is not common however it can happen. We recommend always replacing the idler shaft and all case bearings at the same time of install, many/most will also need the mod idler gear (Our Part# TCG3633160090M) as well. A worn high speed output gear can cause some noise too. Many are choosing to replace those at the same time. We stock all the OE / UD and low range gears, overhaul kits, and individual gears @ Cruiser Outfitters.

If there is any of the above we can help with @ Cruiser Outfitters/CruiserTeq, I’d love to make it happen. We can be shipping kits as soon as tomorrow!
