my CDN M101 is about to go to welders for lid to finally be made and was discussing with welder to either make with 1" square tube which would replicate top edge of trailer or was thinking of 1" angle iron for frame? Has anyone done this in angle which would give it a lower profile of course? thoughts, opinions?

square vs. angle?

Hi Rob,

Swampman built the lid for my Cdn M101 - as you can see in the picture, except at the front (i.e., where the lid hinges), the edge of the lid fits over the square tubing around the top edge of the tub.

Hope this helps, James

Why not use channel and put a seal strip inside it? More weatherproof.

Angle doesn't have as much torsional strength as does tube. I'd make the base of the frame from tube, and then add thin angle to the bottom of the base such that one 'leg' of the angle comes down over the rim of the trailer. Use some of the Trimlok with a sealing bulb for the top to trailer seal.

no pics here at work, but this is what I've done. Square tubing to match the tub and lid is a mirror of the tub. Weatherstrip between the lid and tub. No leaks and I love the look.

That would be neat to see.
Can you post some pics sometime?

Thanks

I've only got a crappy Blackberry camera phone to do it with right now. I'm hoping Santa will bring me a new digital camera. My last one crapped out right before SnT. :crybaby: Nothing expensive. Noticed last night that Costco has Canon's Elph, regularly $180 at $130 right now. That's all I really want or need!

I will post pics tomorrow when light out but I just got my trailer back from welders and the lid works great, same concept as my old wood lids and how they open but they did with 1/4" thick 1.25" angle and heavy gauge steel tops. is heavy duty enough where I can walk on it, load stuff on it and only cost $300. so the angle over laps the top edge and inside if you can imagine. So four lids so I can open up just one or an entire half or both halves and still not hit bottom RTT rack with it at its lowest position/ ride height. So still able to get into storage without having to raise RTT rack.

?

designed it this way so access to storage was easily done without having to raise the RTT rack. I can open up one lid and get what I want, if stuff is farther back I can open up one entire side, or open all lids with RTT rack still being at its riding lowered height. Kinda nice. Some of my older trailer post show rack with wood lids and what it looks like deployed. the poles you see now are where the rack slides into and that basically is the lowest point or so called riding height.

these are old pics with first rack I built in which the curved radius made the ride height a little taller. The latest rack is basically the same except no curve radius, just straight so probably 8-10" lower now, so when I open lids in lowest position it clears bottom of RTT by 4-5". I am going to add a 50lb shorter gas spring on each vertical pole to lift rack this time versus my first design of two long ones in the middle to lift.

I'm new here but thats just a sexy rig right there.

I’m new here and learning my way. I’ve been following your build to include your previous design. I think you hit the mark on your new design. The full cover below would be cool but your design is more practical for those who like the keep thing organize by sections. So how are you going to attach the new gas shocks? I found this post from (womacje) on youtube who placed the gas shock inside the tube.

Rack lift 2nd attempt by expeditionops.com - YouTube

Im currently deployed in Afghanistan, but spend my off time planning my build to include adding a lift so that I can walk under the RRT
