I want to start this by asking that we DO NOT engage in a banter about how bad you think a body lift is, etc.. etc... I have thought about this for a while and right now this is the step i am about to take. However I have a couple concerns and questions still, that I have not seen covered in some of the posts ive been reading. And yes, I have done a fair amount of searching (most of which has resulted in 7 out of 10 threads I come across only containing replies such as "learn to search" or "do a quick search...").

So lets start this off. My FJ80 is a '94. Currently its bone stock, except for a good set of 305/75 BFG MT's. I want to do a 2" body lift because if I am going to do it, I want to reap as much benefit as possible (without going TOO high and just looking rediculous). However I would rather keep it lower in the 1-1.5" range so to minimize further modifications like extending the steering linkage, risk pulling against wiring or other hoses and shift linkages.

So I am just going to ask and see what members who are running these kits think. I have read through all the 1" reviews but have not seen anything solid on a 2" install or any info from people running the 2" kits. Is there a huge difference with the install of a 1.5" kit vs the 1" kit? And how much are we talking to step it up to a 2"??

Thanks in advance, and im sure more questions will follow.

Subscribed. Perfect timing. I was going to order one today but a few questions arose.

1. Is there an enhancement of some sort when ordering urethane bushings over aluminum or steel? Hell, I've heard of people using hockey pucks as spacers.

2. Who else makes a handy dandy kit like 4crawler or Marks? I'm leaning towards Roger Brown's kit (4crawler) because it's considerably less than Marks kit. Only thing is, you have to jump through an obstacle course to get Roger's kit.

What is so difficult about obtaining Roger's kit Baja? I'm interested in the 1" kit myself, one of these days...

Roger isnt bad to work with email him and he responds usually in minutes. I have emailed him a couple of times and had responses from him no later than 2-3 hours later with links pointing me to the right spot on his site for exactly what I needed.

I ended up going with the minimal 1" BL so that I had a little bit of lift and more importantly space around the drive train to work.

Let me clairfy. I've never spoke to or emailed Roger. I'm sitting here at my desk with CC in front of me. But when trying to order a 1" BL, I ran into this ordering procedure....

How to order on-line

Call me lazy if you want, but there are easier ways to place online orders. I can't imagine I'm the only one hesitant on pulling the trigger based on fear of ordering the wrong kit. They have these nifty new websites that do all the sales tax and shipping quotes for you. E-commerce if you will. Not to mention if you want to customize your order with HD/ metric hardware you have to have the right letter codes and pricing then calculate shipping and sales tax?????

I havent gotten that far in the ordering process, but I see what you mean now! LOL

Ok yeah his website could use some uplifting,

So far alot of replies from people with the 1" kit installed. Nobody uses his 1.5 or 2" kits???

Pun intended?

My purpose for a body lift is to gain some more clearance in my wheel wells and cut down on rubbing. With the larger body lifts, you create tons more work and fabrication is a must. Not everyone has those skills. Also, people put bump stops to eliminate rubbing and preserve tires. It really comes down to what your intentions are. Some of the hardcore guys go bigger because they are running 40's with smaller suspension lifts and taller body lifts (low and flexy).

Yeah my final goal is to do this body kit and a 2.5 ome kit to clear 37's. However the tires and ome are probably another 12 months out. I want to.start building bumpers and sliders now but dont want to until i have thee body lifted.

I am thinking if i am going to do it, i want to gain as much as possible. The price between the 1" and 1.5-2" kits are low enough im willing to go taller, i am just not sure what else to expect going past 1".

1" is easy. Not much modification needs to be done, mostly just moving the radiator.

Anything over 1" becomes a lot more difficult. If you're doing a 1.5", you *MIGHT* get away with it, more likely not.

If I was doing anything over than a 1" I'd jump straight to a 2" to 2.5" body lift. 2" will clear 37's better with a small suspension lift, and 2.5" lets you do a drive train lift.

I have a 1", am going to be going to a 2.25" lift to let me tuck the t-case up higher (if not a full drive train lift, close to it).

My 1" lift came from Roger Brown, and I have no complaints. However, it's about half the price if you source it yourself. Grainger sells the UHMW in the correct size that's needed.

Of course.

You'll have to cut the UHMW to length (either chop saw or table saw) then drill the hole (drill press). Not exactly difficult to do.

You could easily hand drill if you were careful, and a skill saw would work as well.

Heck it'd be easy to cut with a hand saw. Just use a miter box to make sure the cut is straight.

You could buy all the equipment and still be cheaper than Roger Brown's lift (though not by much).

Ok somethings gotta be broken with the search feature cause I completely missed this thread: https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/368569-2-body-lift-install.html

I PM'd silverhorse and pretty much answered everything I had a question on. I also looked at grainger and found the stuff needed. Im going to do some shopping and planning (and cleaning in my garage) then get started on this project.

If you decide to go the grainger route I'd be interested in what materials you used. The UHMW rods are easy. I figured I would go with the 1.5" diameter, the hard part is picking the hardware. If anyone knows how long the stock body bolts are I could just add the desired lift to the length and order them.

Yeah only thing holding me back from the DIY kit is knowing what length bolts are required. I am thinking of 1-1.25" of body lift and then stacking on some coil spacers to get me by. Chances are I will just paypal the money to 4Crawler and wait for the mail. I dont have a drill press and dont feel like hand sawing a ton of UHMW.

Thanks! Maybe I will do a DIY kit now ;)

The stock OEM hardware is as follows, just get it a length that accomodates your spacers:
From front to rear:
(1) 175-mm
(2) 110-mm
(3) 110-mm
(4) 110-mm
(5) 125-mm

The stock hardware is 10-mm x 1.25 pitch (metric fine thread) but longer and hardened bolts could only be sourced on short notice in 10-mm x 1.5 pitch. Of course you could just use American too. Because of the thread difference I couldn't re-use the nuts so I used one flange nut w/ external star locking washer and then capped that with a nylon lock nut. Total hardware cost was just under $30 - the 200-mm bolts were $4.50 each!

Hope this is useful to someone.

Quoted just for easier reference... hope you dont mind.

Ok I ordered, and have received my kit and all is well. I want to thank Roger if he happens to see this. Before I ordered the kit, I wanted to contact him via email to make sure there would be no delay, and to get a quote... incase prices had changed. I was suprised to see a reply in my inbox within a matter of minutes, however in his reply where links pointing me to various pages on his website describing the answers to my questions.... pages i have already read through before. Anyhow, i felt like maybe I was bothering him, but I knew he wasn't dead and felt confident sending him my paypal money.

I followed the link in his payment instructions. And entered the price of the kit, kit C, $95 total... and in the description simply put "1.5" body lift for 1994 Landcruiser FJ80 with standard hardware" Total with shipping was $118 (insured) and some change. A few hours after my payment I recieved confirmation from him regarding my order with details and shipping address.

Three days later I got a box with my lift in it :) and he even refunded me $5 s&h because he was able to ship it cheaper than expected.

Even though his website maybe alittle crude, his ordering process was probably some of the smoothest ive dealt with. A simple paypal payment, with basic instructions... and your all set. I do have to say, make absolutely sure your shipping address is correct. For some reason PayPal had my old address as my default and I did not catch it in time. I had to have Roger cancel my initial order so I could re-order using my correct address.
