I picked up a 10" Sheldon lathe yesterday. They guy warned me the motor was going, and sure enough today I burned it up. It wasn't the original motor or I would consider taking it down and having it rebuilt... also there is a crack in the housing.

So.. I need to replace the motor and I wanted to find something that isn't going to be a cheap Chinese turd. It's a nice lathe and I want a good motor for it, 1/2 HP 1750 RPM. What brands should I be looking at for electric motors... I have no idea where to even start researching a new motor for it.

Specs of the plate on the motor? I can probably steer you to a few choices.

I'm sick as a dog today and the chances of me leaving the couch before noon are low... but I'll try to get out there this afternoon and get the info.

There is the lathe, Sheldon 10".

Here is the motor that's in it now, not original as you can see, but it's cool with the navy yard plate on the side.

I'm pretty sure it came with a 1/2 HP motor not 1/3. Either way, I need to replace it and am looking for something quality to put in it's place, but really don't know what is good and what is crap when it comes to motors.

Well you will never find one as well built as that one(that isn't outrageous), what size shaft since I don't see a frame size and do you have 208-230 capability?

I do have 230... I would RATHER keep it 110, but it's not a big deal if I can't. We are rewiring the shed in the next few weeks since my plasma cutter is maxing out the wiring and causing some issues.. we plan to overkill it so we could plan for one extra 220 outlet.

Here are some more pictures of my new toy.. er.. I mean tool.

In researching I've found it should have 3/4 - 1HP motor. It was built in the early 1940's. I'm very happy with it, it should be a great addition to my little shop.

I have a nice GE 3/4 hp 110/220 V motor sitting in my garage with low hours on it that you could have if you come get it. Other good brands include Westinghouse, Baldor and Dayton. None are particularly expensive.

Thanks for the offer, but I found one on Ebay today for $25 that seems like it should work great.
