Hey everyone,

I just had a reputable car audio installer put in a BT hands free + Calling solution in my truck. They mentioned the speakers were toast which they are. He told me you can only use OEM JBL speakers in it. Is this true or is there any aftermarket option? More so than cost I would like to bring it up to speed on sound quality. I would love to hear if anyone has by passed this without installing a totally new stereo system in it.

Honestly I'd like more updated info on this as well - especially for the 03-05 oem stereo.

You can definitely use aftermarket speakers

I've read the FAQ stereo threads more than once - may want to start there but you'll still have questions like I do.

Post up any stereo upgrades for us to reference

yea im going to deep dive. My car audio guy said if you upgrade it will burn the amp out. Not sure how true that is.

Are the surrounds on your speakers toast, or are the speakers toast? You can replace the surrounds yourself very inexpensively and they'll sound as good as new.

they told me it was all of them. After listening to it. It sounds like the main speakers.

My wife's 05 has 4 ohm infinity refere speakers for over a year with no issues

You can find 2 ohm impedance speakers that will work just fine .

Are the speakers making sound? If so, the surrounds have probably rotted out. If there is no sound coming from the speakers at all, then there may be another issue which could be the speakers, wiring issue, amp failure, etc.

Put your ear next to the tweeters to make sure they are working. Then do the same for the woofers to see if they are making noise. If the woofers are buzzing and farting on bass heavy music, the surrounds need to be replaced.

2 ohm are factory.

2 ohm are hard to find, not impossible, for our rigs

4 ohm are what the auto sound guys will pitch. Note that if you use these, your system will distort at a lower volume. Not sure of the long term affects of this (higher current leading to "burn out").

My '05 door speakers were toast as well - voice coil separated from the cone. I used Crutchfield to match the vehicle make/model for fit and ended up getting the Kicker 41DSC674 - 6-3/4" 2-way speakers all the way around. They sound good to me - definitely better than the stock, torn ones. I had to get the speaker wiring harness too, so I went with Metra 72-9301. Easy do-it-yourself replacement. Only issue was the speaker screw holes didn't line up exactly with the ones in the door, but a little trimming of plastic and they went in securely.

So it's true that you can run the 4 ohm aftermarket speakers with the integrated amp? I didn't know it was possible, albeit I knew it could damage the amp in the long run. As long as it didn't damage my new speakers, I'd be ok taking that risk. Would give me more time to space out all the stereo upgrades instead of doing it all at once.

Yep, for me, 3 years later and no issues.

Sorry for reviving this thread , but for those who have been using 4 ohm speakers for years with no issues. I just installed 4 ohm speakers all around and installed some Infinity Tweeters in place of the oem ones . They sound great however the moment I start the car , I can hear very quietly some white noise coming from the tweeters specifically when nothing is playing (maybe doors speakers too).when I raise the volume when nothing is playing you can easily hear it. It’s not noticble when driving or when something is playing , but is this normal ? The tweeters came with a high pass filter that I installed with them inline with the metra kit .
