I am looking to purchase a vehicle to get into weekend overlanding. I have found a 04 LC w/ 130k in great condition for $17k. Also found 06 LX with same mileage for same price in same condition. Both are stock w/ no aftermarket upgrades. Which one should I choose? Going to take it slow w/ either one. Probably roof rack first then suspension w/ lift next. Thanks for the advise in advance

Howdy and welcome to Mud. Be sure to do your due diligence on the maintenance/repair history of both vehicles. Buy the newest LC/LX you can afford is a common saying around here.

What about the AHC issue on the LX. Should I worry when I get ready to lift?

Me personally, I would go the LX I love the 06-07 and the ahc would be a plus for me if the truck has been maintained. If it was 06LC vs 06LX maybe the LC would win out.

Hows the undercarriage on both? Rust would play a big factor in the decision for me. Secondly, my personal preference is for simplicity so I'd lean toward a non-AHV vehicle. (Not that there is anything wrong with AHC, it's a great system)

the one in best mechanical and cosmetic condition with least owners and most maintance history, and less rust!

AHC is amazing plus all the extra luxury items when going LX. If it's a family hauler then AHC is a plus as you won't sacrifice comfort and safety when lifting and instead you lift with the push of a button when ready to off road.. with 33" tires and AHC set to high it should get you an easy 2.5-3" lift compared to stock.

I’d concur with what’s been said. I have two 06 LXs myself.

Also, I think you’ll be really surprised, like I have been, with the capability and comfort of the AHC offroad. If you absolutely NEED a lift on the truck, then it’s probably easier to get a truck without the AHC. Either way, it will cost you in giving up some options and extras or in labor/time to remove the AHC system.

06 LX had 2 owners. Last was 10 yrs in PA. 04 is 1 owner. Spent whole life in NC and I actually know the owner. Also found a 02 LX for 12K that had 4 owners. Spent 14yrs in GA and 2 yrs in Nebraska. What ya'll think

10 yrs in PA says 10 times more likely to have rust. Mine spent half that time in Maryland and has some hidden spots I'll probably have to deal with at some point.

10 years in PA can cause significant rust on the underneath - make sure you take a look before pulling the trigger. One owner in NC sounds great if the maintenance has been kept up

Maintenance has been kept up on 04 LC except timing belt has not been charged yet.

Should I stay with 100 series or venture to 200?

17k is at the higher end of the spectrum of what I would consider a great 100 series deal as you are now inching towards 200 series territory for high mileage version from 20k-25k for LX versions, but you must be willing to fly or be patient out as not many 200 series available in that price range.

On car gurus when i search for LX570 under 25k nationwide there are 38 results ranging from 19k-25k.

Going to get the 04 LC. It had the one owner and in NC the whole time. Got the price down a little also. What is the first mod you would do on a stock LC? Going to try a little weekend overlanding but also might take the boys to beach and golf course.

First mod? Remove running boards. But even before that, a good baseline. Heater tees, double-check all the fluids, etc.

Enjoy it!

Do I need to put sliders on? My wife will have hard time getting in w/o running boards

Depends on the budget :)

First rule in my house is to do whatever I want to the truck so long as I don't make it hard on her. So...I ended up with sliders. It wasn't really a compromise, since I wanted them anyway. Metaltech is doing a pretty good sale right now—that's where I'd look (I have them, and they're superb even at full price).

As far as first mods—the fo'real answer would be to do whatever makes it more capable or convenient for your particular uses. "Take off the running boards" is kind of a running joke here (though it really does look better).

My first 'mod' was to add a HAM radio to get my LX ready to run with the regular group of guys. Second was to sort out the "entertainment" system to bring it into something reasonably modern (VLine VL2 for me). I left the running boards on until a rather large rock (and some particularly uninspiring route-choosing) made the decision easier.

Thanks. I don't want to sound stupid but what is a VLine VL2? This is my first venture into LC and overlanding. I'm an muscle car guy so this is new and you guys make it sound exciting.
