Hey guys,

I have a problem as of this morning. It's the first time I have had a problem since owning the vehicle. I was told it maybe a water pump problem. I attached a video for the audio. I'm hoping it isn't the water pump because I was quoted $670 by two different shops (non-Toyota) here in NC. I also had plans to move this weekend and pull a trailer so I'm hoping this isn't serious.

  • Current Mileage: 175,xxx
  • TB/WP replaced: 135,xxx (2013) by Toyota
  • Purchased with: 150,xxx

Thanks for the help!

It does look like the water pump or fan clutch. In your video, you can see the fan is not turning straight but wobbling. I would ensure all the nuts are tightened on the fan clutch and then the water pump. You could remove the fan clutch and see if the water pump still wobbles. And you can check the fan and clutch too.

If it is the WP, you can get the water pump or TB kits off amazon and replace it yourself. If you want a shop to do it, I would consider buying the TB kit and having a shop do it, labor is about a grand. The its is about $175 http://www.amazon.com/Aisin-TKT-021-Engine-Timing-Water/dp/B008EEYWKI?tag=ihco-20 I know it's not time yet, but it's not that much more to replace everything than their quoted price. And this way you know it was done.

Thanks for the help. I was hoping it wasn't the water pump. I can't afford TB/WP labor. So I will dig into the FSM and use my Christmas gift cards from Amazon for the parts.

Water pump going bad will leak coolant. Check your weep hole at bottom of time belt cover, it's under and behind harmonic balancer (large lower pulley). Have you been adding coolant or is it low, this would be your first clue.

The fan is where I'd start as it didn't look good, possible loose or bad clutch.

I'll check the weep hole tonight. I've added coolant once since owning it. I'm also watching videos on faulty fan clutch and will report back when I know more.

I let it idle for about 30 minutes and drove it around yesterday and it went away but, the sound came back this morning.

That is not the best news.

Best time to check coolant is when cold (cool down overnight) then fill to cold line (~2" from bottom) of reservoir. Your needing to add coolant could have been from PO not topping correctly, overheat blowing off or leak in system. This need to be determine.

Only Toyota recommended coolant should be used with demineralized water (if water called for) when topping off or flushing. Coolant system must be flush at recommended Toyota schedule. To not do these things is asking for trouble. Best practice for any purchase of a used vehicle is to base-line, as you don't no what has been used by PO.

I've decided to do the tb/wp and replace clutch fan from reading here. It probably will take me awhile since I'll be doing it after work.

What sucks is I was actively looking for a 4runner to replace the LC (to big just for me)

Thanks again.

Had the same problem 2 weeks ago. The fan pulley's bearing was shot and pulley was wobbing, i could see some metal flakes underneath the bracket as well. Replaced entire bracket and all was well.

Found several other mentions of the "sebulbas pod racer" problem on tundra forums. around 175k miles the bearing seems to give up the ghost if the bracket wasn't replaced when it supposed to be at the 90k sevice.

Replacing the WP/TB will not solve the problem. Fans are not supposed to wobble like that. Mine never did until that faithful morning 100 miles away from home 2 weeks ago...

Do you have part numbers for everything you replaced that fixed your problem and did you stick with OEM?

Here's the parts list for much of the front end stuff. The fan bracket referred to above is 16307-0F010

Timing belt 13568-09070
Serpentine belt 90916-02585
Water pump 16100-09201
Idler pulley 13503-0F010
Idler pulley 13505-0F010
Tensioner (T-belt) 13540-50030
Tensioner (serp belt) 16620-0W101
Thermostat 90916-03100
Thermostat gasket 16346-50010
Housing O-ring 96761-24019
Fan bracket 16307-0F010
Serpentine belt idler 16604-0F010

sounds just like when my fan pulley bracket died at 203000. Its about 80% of the way to doing the full tbelt and pump. And I would say its one of the hardest parts to remove in the full job or I should say with a 2000 it is.

The oem made it 200K I think its worth the extra cost to go oem just because of it being a pain to get all the bolts out.
