I've got a 4X4 LABS kit and will be welding it in short measure.

Long story short: a guy telling me to go 035 solid + gas and another saying 045 flux as the 035 w/ gas will produce a weaker weld...

Is one better than the other?

Bumper build right?

I'd use .030 with gas myself.

.045 is for very thick material..

most of what will be welded is 1/4" and a couple pieces of 3/8"

What welder?

This is one of the things that might make you want to reconsider welding it yourself. If you don't know the answer, then you don't have the necessary experience. It is the technique that makes the difference and stuff falling off of bumpers, like your spare tire can kill someone. Hire a welder to weld it.

Very good point.

I've enlisted the help of a friend, with welding experience, to watch / help / check my work.

How did your Labs bumper turn out? I welded mine up with my Lincoln 140 using .035 flux core and no one is dead yet. In fact I beat the hell out of it on Rubicon.

Pretty well, used 035 with solid core. Also no deaths :D

.035 with gas and a full current weld and no worries. I'd consider flux if using a small welder on thick material. up to 5/16 and I'm good with .035 and CO2, and a good surface for the bead, with my lincoln 140. over that, and if I couldn't get my hands on a big MIG, then I'd consider the flux core...flux core will penetrate deeper, but is harder to make a clean weld with...

Lincoln 175 and used .35 fluxes on all my project builds (6 different sets of sliders, 3 rear bumpers and now front)
Just build the front last weekend 12 hours of welding and grinding. The rear is a lot faster to build.
