Hey all,

Was recently driving out on the highway and broke down about 100 miles from home.
The LC suddenly lost gears and developed this rattling sounds, see video.

Does anyone have any idea what the noise is?

Take care

Judging by the fact that you didn't have to put it in gear at all to recreate the sound, I'm going with a bad torque converter. When you cycle through the gears does the noise change? What happens when you do and give it gas in all the gears? Can you easily drop the transfer case into low range?

Thanks for the response!

The noise stays the same in every gear, as well as switching from H4 to L4.
The rattle does speed up very slightly when gas it given but no substantial change.

Does the truck move at all when in any gear, or does it just sit there and continue making that noise?

Yeah I'd say it's the torque converter. If anyone else has other ideas then I'm sure they will chime in. But given the sound and symptoms that's what my bet is on

Thank you for the responses.

The difficult part is, there aren't many transmission shops in Hilo, Hawai'i.
We have a dealership in town but I am apprehensive about what they will charge.

I wrench on the FJ60 quite often but this 100 series is my lady's and I haven't done much work on it.

and being in the middle of the pacific doesn't help with getting good used parts.

and just to be certain, you checked the drive flanges on the front end? and or tried the transfer lock?
