the power antenna on the 's 'runner stopped working. i can hear the motor running, but the antenna doesn't go up and down. ive priced getting this repaired... @ $500. is there any reason i can't put a plain mast antenna on instead of another power unit that is bound to fail again over time? any other suggestions? thanks in advance - CW

just get a antennafrom Cdan or your dealer- should only be about 60.00- the plastic lifting piece just broke- its in a tough spot but easy fix. Good luck

If you want to take care of this once and for all, I suggest going with a Tacoma whip antenna. Either way, here is a write up to do either.

Not take it off but loosen the splash guard underneath. Take a close look at it and you will see what you need to get to it. The tacoma antenna is a good mod as once you do this once- you will not want to ever to do it again.

Had this same thing happen on my 4runner. Took it to my mechanic. He said the band that lifts and lowers the antenna was broken. Don't think it was more than $90 to have it fixed while they rotated and balanced my tires.

My broke. I cut the power supply to the motor. I deployed the mast manually no need to spend money on new antenna.

You need the antenna mast/rod. Here's a writeup for the 80 series that would be similar. Power Antenna Mast Replacement

You can get the mast out by removing the nut at the top of the antenna, but the broken-off piece of nylon shaft will still be wound around the gear, preventing you from just sticking a new mast in there. The inner fender liner needs to be pulled back, if you have flares that makes it harder. The antenna assembly is unbolted and the cover taken of, but no wires have to be disconnected.

I've replaced the mast on mine twice now. My wife now remembers to turn the radio off when entering the drive through car wash. CDAN is the way to go on these.
