Hi,
I have a customers 2002 4 Runner that the rear pinion bearing failed. I disassembled this morning and found that somebody's been in there...lol. I 'm pretty confident I found the cause of the bearing failure. The shim for the pinion gear is missing. I looked in my Mitchell repair info and it looks like this should have a shim under the rear(big) pinion bearing on the pinion gear. There is nothing there on this one. I also looked under the races just in case someone tried to shim it that way, but nothing there either. The pattern on the gears looks aweful, which makes sense not only from the slop developed from the pinion bearing failure but also from it not being shimmed correctly in the first place. I'm getting ready to reassemble with new ring and pinion with the same 4.10 ratio but I'd like to at least have a ball park idea for what pinion shim to start with. Have done plenty of diffs over the years and most of the time you at least start with the original shim and play with it from there. Just not sure where to start on this one. Hoping one of you guys can tell me what you have experienced. I know they are all a bit different but I'd like a starting point.
Thanks in advance,
Dave
