never experienced this before......my steering wheel started shaking and whipping back and forth violently, getting worse as accelerating. Also thumping noise in time with acceleration. Pulled into nearest Toyo dealership. Not confident of their diagnosis. They said they thought it was my differential before they looked at it and said it would be very expensive to fix. After they looked at it they said they thought it was my CV's and that would be $1,800 with parts from O'riley. Going to have it towed to a buddy's shop in Austin. Any thoughts as to what it might be? Thanks!!!!

not enough info... but if it does this while driving and goes away as you slow down or speed up... then this is a common problem with ford trucks so much so that they call it the ford truck wobble... easy to google as there are several factors at work... sometimes it's just the tires or how inflated they are... but if it's linked to the rpm of your engine then you can have a valve problem in your power steering that is pumping fluid to each side of your rack... sometimes you can turn the steering wheel full lock to lock and it will fix itself
good luck

Thanks. unfortunately I can't give any more info than that. The shaking in the steering wheel had become so bad I had to get it off the road. I will report back findings once I know what it is.

OK. Replaced UCA with Nitrogear and replaced bushings in steering rack....steering improved but the vibration and thumping has gotten much worse. Won't do it all the time but it is becoming more frequent. Torque converter going bad? Mechanics are stumped and as figured it won't do it for them. I drove it 45 minutes to Boerne before it started and then it got so bad I had to park for awhile. It will shake (also feel it through the gas pedal) and increasing loud thumping only under load. Stops when I let off the pedal.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks

Can you find a uninhabited road and post video? Your description is by far much more extreme than any other issue I've ever heard of. Sounds like Death Wobble which is highly unlikely in an IFS truck.

Have you checked your upper and lower ball joints to see if they are loose? Are your shocks still good? IIRC, you just put on a lift kit, so that may not be it, but it's worth a try.

I know you mentioned you were moving back to the Hill Country but I could do a checkover if you are still in Houston.

So you have a firmly mounted rack and good upper ball joint's now.
If there is still confusion on drive train vs. chasis as the root cause you may consider pulling the front drive shaft and drive flanges (as you would if you broke a front diff or cv on trail), lock the center diff and go for a rear wheel drive only test drive. If it still thumps and vibes then it is NOT the CV's front diff or front drive shaft.

My honest first thought was loose lug nuts or a greneaded whell bearing, is the problem that violent?

^^^My first thought also AimCOtaco. If CV are good.

Check snap ring gap (may have come off), wheel bearing, drive shaft axle bearing and bushing. You have been servicing the wheel bearing and axle bearings and bushings ever 30K mile, right?

CV was found to be bad....left side. Missed 2 times during inspection. Replaced. White knuckle ride into Houston the other morning. Thanks so much for all the thoughts. Beer on me if you all make it to Houston........not kidding

I am servicing wheel and axle bearings.....

Duggy I am keeping an apartment here during weekdays. Give me a call and let's grab a beer.

Thanks all. I will keep you posted
