Yesterday, in Dallas summer heat, I suddenly had an A/C problem due to a horrible whining noise coming from the A/C compressor area and a smoke smell from the compressor belt. What I think my problem actually is is an A/C compressor belt tensioner underneath the compressor. It seems (I hope) like a classic case of bearings that are worn out. I am very happy to find this, as I originally thought my compressor or clutch had sh*t the bed.

Has anyone else had this problem? What is the technical name for this part? Is it just a compressor belt tensioner?

Attached are some pics after I removed it today. You can see where I removed it from the shaft/bolt that holds it on underneath the A/C compressor.

A/C belt tensioner I think. If the pulley and mounting bolt are ok, you can get the bearing at Napa. Don't remember the part number, just take out the old pulley to compare when you go in. I replaced mine when I was rebuilding the enigne becouse the bearing was getting a little noise. If I find the part number, I will post it up.

OK. I replaced my idler pulley bearing today and I still have the same problem. This pulley is barely even touching the belt. I can't tell if the screeching noise is from the belt getting hot (expanding) and slipping or it is a result of my A/C clutch going bad.

How tight against the belt should this pulley be? Is the lack of tension against the belt causing this?

Is it possible for a clutch to work when cold but seize up when it gets hot? How about the compressor?

You said you smelled smoke? how about burnt rubber? if the clutch has issues it can stop. the belt will keep going around but get hot and smell.

I did smell smoke, but I just can't tell if the clutch/compressor is locking up and causing the belt to burn or if the belt is slipping and causing the burn smell.

YA that what I was thinking..................

How about reviving this one from the boneyard- what did the problem end up being?

It ended up being a bad compressor; I redid the whole system with OEM parts and R12 last year...cools like a champ!

Can't remember what that idler pulley part number was though...
