On Sunday, I drowned my Hilux for a second time.

Where would the Oil be going, if the Exhaust isn't Blue, and it doesn't smell like Oil is burning?
Also, when I removed the Oil Filler Cap, whilst the Engine was running, to fill it with Oil, it looked and smelt like Exhaust coming out. On the one and a half hour drive Home, it was well down on Shetlands, and it Idled at about 890 RPM.

Penrite Semi-Synthetic SAE 5W/40

I've put in a new Air Filter and Oil Filter, changed the Oil to Repco API CC SAE 20W/50 and tomorrow I'll get new Glow Plugs, then I'll start it and see how much Oil it uses then.

Whe you say "drowned" do you mean submersed it while the engine was running?

Regards

You may have bent some expensive parts Mate. Best bring it to a shop at this point. My guess is that the more you drive it the more damage you do. A friend hydraulic'd an 8cyl chev diesel - truck only had 8,000kms on it. Anyway, he fried the turbo, bent 2 rods and other problems - still drove home, was smoking like a bastard though.

Let us know what you find out.

I highly doubt it's got bent Rods, as I drove it in Low Range Second with 1,000 to 3,500 RPM about 10 minutes after I got it to fire. Once I got on the Highway for Home, I shifted up at 3,000 RPM and once Home I put my Foot to the Floor and got 5,300 RPM and no vibrations.

There was a thread in the 80 series section about someone losing oil through the gasket at the oil filter. If you've just installed a new oil filter, you might want to check that. Sometimes the gaskets get distorted and don't seal properly, and the oil just pumps out.

Just a thought.

Check for excess blow-by? Seems you got some abnormal crankcase pressure?

bummer. liked the pics though :D

could also be the old "O"ring stuck to the filter housing with the new filter and "O"ring on top hence a possible leak...
seen it in the past...

I've put in new Glow Plugs and a Fuel Filter. I ran the Engine for about 40 minutes to an hour, and the Oil dropped about 2mm down the Dipstick.
The Engine smoked the whole time, and didn't Idle smoothly, also when comming off WOT the Engine is very slow comming down in revs.

Jonathan.

Check the compressions. The 2L is a remarkably forgiving engine. My 2LTE ran OK but noisy when I broke a valve and it holed a piston, idled quite well when I pulled off the road before I switched it off and started first time on the key when I was mad enough to try it. You may have broken the rings on one of the pistons as they are a weak point if you Hydraulic the engine. The oil must either be leaking out or burning - think you would notice the leak so burning is the best guess. If it is a non Turbo then the only places I can think to look are the Pistons or rings, the valves or the head gasket.

You are going to need to pull off the head anyway to check.

Is a 2L-T a bolt in replacement for a 2L, apart from the Exhaust?

Jonathan.

2LT will fit straight in, need the front pipe from the exhaust and the fuel pump etc.

Don't think you would want to modify the 2L block to fit the 3L pistons - you would need a 3L head anyway. Better to get a complete 3L engine. However a 3L head will fit a 2L block if it is the later type of 2L engine.

You can also fit the turbo off a 2LT onto a 3L head, just need the complete assembly including manifolds, pipework etc.

Best bet to me would be the 3L route and then get hold of a 2LT Turbo and ancillaries.
