Hi all I am new to this form. I have a 1999 Land Cruiser w/ 139000 miles. She runs great till the past 3 months. It in the past has not started and when jumped she started. Now she won't turn over and I am trying to figure out with my son a few things.

1) where is the starter located.

2) is that what is wrong?

3) how much to fix.

I have have 2 estimates from Toyota to replace the starter of over $550.00. Plus the tow...........

Any help would really be appreciated.

It's probably starter contacts -- do a search in this forum for those two words and you'll find that it's a fairly common problem at your milage and up. Unfortunately, the starter is in a really difficult position and it takes a couple hours of mechanic time to get into it -- that's why you're getting such a high estimate from the dealerships.
Of course, the starter is also fairly pricey, so check to see if they would just replace the conacts for you and charge you less money. (Although some folks think you might as well pay the extra for a new starter, since the labor costs more than the parts.)

Have you had the battery tested? That would also be a likely culprit. Is there water in the battery? Will it not start even while being jumped now?

Do you know of anyone who can take out the battery to have it tested? Can your son do that? Where are you? Are you cute.......damn, did I just say that ( :

No really, get the battery out-very easy. Have it tested-free. Go from there. The starters on these trucks are not easily accessible so, the price that you are seeing is in line.

Post you location and maybe one of us can assist you in at least getting your battery out.

is the starter under the intake manifold?

Yep. Basically between the two cylinder banks. If you're fairly accomplished at DIY, the wrench wielders on this board have said it's a    or so job (that's 3 out of 5, with, as I understand it, 5 being an engine rebuild).

If the battery has a shorted cell, the engine won't turn over even with a jump. The battery is easy to remove and the chain auto parts stores will test it for free (AutoZone, Pep Boys, Advanced, etc.) When disconnecting the battery, remove the negative(-) cable first and when reconnecting, connect it last. The battery hold down strap needs a 12mm wrench or socket to loosen and the two terminals need a 10mm. If you need a new battery, Interstate is a good company. Their C27F-XHD is a heavy duty battery for around $75 that fits perfectly.

I'd say test the battery first. To me that's what it sounds like... Usualy when the starter is going out it makes a clicking sound(when you turn the key). Sometimes you can turn the key enough to get it started. You do have to pull the intake manifold to get to it. Not a daunting task, but takes a while. If it is the starter you can rebuild it. Just remember how all the washers go when you pull it apart. Good luck.

Go to the vendors forum section, there is a thread that tells you how to contact him. You could also click on the American Toyota advertisement/banner at the top of the page (if it comes up, different ads are rotated each time you load a new page).

You can also go to the USER CP and send him a PM addressed to "Cdan".

it is cruiserdan not cdan if you are sending a PM.

I think he changed it a while back
