I'm fairly new to the list here and have learned a lot from reading and searching the threads. I installed my 2 1/2" OME lift on wednesday. Went fairly well except for when one of the jackstands I was using decided to give up and caused the front passenger side of the vehicle to hit the concrete. :doh: Fortunately I wasn't under the truck at the time. Also, no real damage was done except for a minor bend in the shield on the brake rotor which I was able to repair. I guess I will be buying better jack stands for future projects.

Also, I installed my new 285's on friday night. Looks good. I will try to post some pictures as soon as I take some, but its rainy and crappy here right now.

I really like the way the truck sits and rides now. :cheers:

You were very lucky my friend. We could have been reading your obituary instead of this post. For us DIY'ers it has to be safety first in everything. Buy yourself a quality floor jack and some quality 6-ton or bigger jack stands. There was a thread a couple of weeks ago with links to different brands. They are much cheaper than a new leg.

Wow! Welcome to the forum. Glad to see you're still alive.
That's why I got 12 ton stands (HF, about $80) and I also always put some blocks under the wheels when I can, and leave the floor jack under there as well....
And no, I don't wear belts and suspenders at the same time.... Of course, losing my pants will just cause me to get hit on by the ladies, losing a stand could cause you to get hit by the truck.... :D
 
I believe Doug suggested it most recently; it's always a good idea to put the tyre/wheel under the frame after you have removed it to work on the truck. I would still get squashed but most of the skinny guys would come out OK. :D

Yeah, I got pretty lucky. The front driver's tire was the first one I removed. I had just pulled it off the truck when the jack stand collapsed. It's absolutely going to be new, larger jack stands for any future upgrades that require raising the wheels off the ground. :whoops:

Dude I assume that you are in the Navy. You know they always teach and preach about Safety and ORM. Just like everybody here are investing in at least 3 ton jack and 6 to 8 ton jack stands. Lucky, you did not get crushed by that rig of yours if you were down there. Next time think safety first.

I am a newbie to lc's as well, and have a jack question. I am needing to buy a new floor jack, and have narrowed down to 2 3 ton jacks, an OTC and a crapsman. Would a 20" lift work for most service on a 91 LC, or would 24" be better? Thanks Mike
 
If you have a Costco by you, get there heavy duty jack....works well only thing is that its one heavy jack...

Seabee: what brand of jackstands did you have that failed ???be interested to know... usually when i work under the car, always have the jack stand, jack and tire underneath for safeguards in case somethign goes wrong....glad to see you are okay..
 
How did the stand fail? Did the supports give out?

I had a truck drop once- I wasn't under it or home at the time. I have a gravel driveway and rain had softened the dirt enough that the jack stand sunk vertically into the ground and dropped the drivers side on the rotor, like yours did.

Now I put the jack stand on a slab of concrete.
 
I would be interested as well in how the stand failed. If it is possible, post a pic or two of it.

Glad you were not under there bro...

A 24" would be better. You're looking for something at least 3 tons with a good, slow, steady, release valve. I have the Crafsman "1-pump lift" model. It seems to be well built and versatile enough for a home garage. It probably wouldn't hold up under commercial use but it's been great for my needs.

I think I've got the same one as Beowulf. The one I got was marked as an "extra high-lift SUV jack", I got mine on sale :)

I also picked up the matching black-and-yellow extra-high jackstands. $15 for good solid, 24" stands.

One other thing....SAFETY GLASSES! or a face shield of some type.
I've _never_ heard anyone say, "Damn, I wish I hadn't been wearing those glasses...."

Welcome to the club, but remember that you're working on an older, heavier vehicle than most folks. Stay safe.

A friend working on a G-wagon his garage had the jack stand slip out. The rear drum (older G) landed on his arm and pinned his arm under it, right at his elbow. He thought for a second, then figured his arm was gone, in one quick move he pushed as hard as he could with both legs and yanked his arm, it came out, solid purple from the shoulder down, no bones broken, all the hair was ripped off his arm and his palm had a big hole in it where the shock hit (what he was actually yanking on when it fell) and was bleeding like mad. He was lucky to be alive and knows it. He said it was odd how he actually thought how he would yank on his arm, probably ripping it off at some point, throw it in the freezer and then go to the hospital, glad I've never had to make decisions like that.
 
I have the Costco 3.5 tons. That thing is way sturdy!
Specs say 21". I wouldn't mind having a couple of inches more. When I put it under the front diff and want both wheels up by enough to put a ramp or a block under them, I am about maxing out the jack. Not a problem, always worked, but 2" more would be more comfortable. OTOH that thing goes real low which is great for other applications. Only thing is that the release mechanism if not the smoothest. I did drill a hole through the handle to put a bar in so I have better leverage. Much better. I may also need to lube the Ujoint...

I'm glad that he was OK. :)

I bet he has a new perspective in/of life. ;)

Hope it won't happen to any of us.
Let's be extra careful and make the habit of not crawling under the rig until all of our safety measures are properly/securely in place.

It might not be a bad idea to have a back up plan if something should happen (work with the garage/house door open so you can yell for help, work on it during the day, have a cell phone near by, etc...) Better safe than sorry, right?

Please post a pic of the failed jackstand. I had a crapman jackstand break. The locking pivot for the adjustable top on the jackstand sheared. Lucky I had a tire under the truck. Also my jack bit the dust this winter, oil seal failed. Made lifting the truck really difficult.... :rolleyes:
 
I'm assuming nobody uses the 3000 lb aluminum jacks? Seems to marginal to me even if you're just lifting one corner at a time. I have used one to lift the whole front end up but it had me puckered up even I was standing clear. I haven't seen any rated more that 3000 lbs, but they are nice and light to hall around :princess:
