Was wondering if anyone had experienced fuel pump failure before, was driving this AM and the motor begin to bog down a little, tach never shot up or anything, kindof sputter a little then just shut off, starts for a split second then cuts back off. I am assuming it is the fuel pump, but am not positive, any help would be appreciated as a wounded cruiser is sitting on the side of the road.....thanks in advance

Best way to find out is to pull the hose off the carb or the outlet side of the fuel pump (located on right side of engine to the right of the distributor). Then, if you can get someone else to watch it, fire engine. If you see fuel flow, it ain't the fuel pump! The thing I like about these old tractor engines is the manual fuel pump, because they seldom fail, but my Dad disconnected his manual pump and put on an electric pump. It was only about $15-20 at any auto parts store and makes for a great fix if they don't have a replacement. The only other thing I can think of off-hand is the fuel filter might be clogged. From the sounds of it, though, I'd say it's something to do with the fuel.

When my fuel pump went out the only symptoms were that it wouldn't crank over at all. Once you got the rpm's up high enough it would keep itself going, but you had to dump a bunch of gas in the carb or some other flamable liquid to get it to start.

Pulling the line at the carb is the best diagnostic tip I ever got. Very easy to do, and very informative.

If you are talking about your FJ62 then try searcing the archives for fuel pressure regulator threads. FPRs have received much attention lately and seem to be prone to failure at this stage of the truck's lifespan. Good luck.

I think he has a 62. No carb and electric pump in gas tank.

I have never had this problem so have never tried to diagnose it, so take the following for what it is worth (not much). But, what I would do is go buy a new filter, disconnect the lines at the filter and then when off have someone crank the engine (may not even have to crank it, may only have to have key in run position). If you get fuel flow, then not the pump; if none, then probably the pump and you found the problem. Put the new filter in. If it wasn't the pump, maybe the new fuel filter will solve the problem. If it wasn't either of these, then I don't know....fuel pressure regulator maybe?

Alright i have disconnected the fuel line at the fuel filter got gas flowing there. Disconnected the fuel line at fuel filter exit, got fuel flow there, what next, seems as if it is not getting fuel/sparking correctly, very speratic does it sound like it catches and trys to start.

so now she is running, haven't done anything but she is intermitten still, usually at low idle, or right when you want to accelerate, but once she gets moving she runs like a champ. any other thoughts?

Check with the 3FE guys

Check with the guys on the 3FE discussion board on Yahoo.

Couldn't get more helpful people anywhere for the 3FE engines.

I'd lean toward the Fuel Pressure Regulator in a 62
